Ulverton Whips
By Billy Rainford
I apologize for not doing a Photo Report from round 9 of the 2015 Rockstar Energy MX Nationals. I ran out of time with having to get to Walton Raceway so quickly the following week, and then getting daily updates up from the Parts Canada TransCan took priority last week.
Anyway, the racing may be old news, but whips off the big tabletop that sits at the very top of the beautiful Ulverton MX track just outside Drummondville never get old. Here are a bunch of shots from my favourite jump on the entire tour.
Let’s ease into this with a very nice ‘business whip’ from Kaven Beoit.
Morgan Burger led the list with an amazing few whips in 2014.
Jess Pettis is in the running for ‘Best Whip’ with this entry.
Marcus Nilsen looking off into the distance.
There we go, Morgan.
Hey, Jeremy Pronovost, how about a little ‘arm swag?’
Cole Martinez getting a little ‘old school’ with this one.
Jess was having a great time in practice!
Brad Nauditt feeling it with this hang time.
Speed AND whip style, but can he cook?
I bet he has maybe two dishes that he cooks.
Effortless.
Shawn Maffenbeier checks in and gets on the board.
Ask and you shall receive!
We all knew Dylan Wright had whip skills.
Ya, we see you, JC. Sometimes I have to make then black and white to cover some blur…
Shawn Rife with a textbook ‘turndown pancake’ here.
Then he lets it float…
Blake Savage hanging off the back.
And holds it for days.
Mike Treadwell thinks he’s completely flat here.
It’s hard to beat Morgan’s in-air style.
Nathan Bles making sure I’m paying attention.
Third verse, same as the first.
Jeremy Medaglia gets in on the action.
You keep whipping and I’ll keep clicking.
Drew Roberts gets the MX1 boys in on the action.
Kyle Swanson had some of the best ones in 2014.
Davey Fraser shows us how they do it in Nova Scotia.
Dylan Schmoke also has some of the sweetest in-air style.
Hayden Halstead can always be counted on for some ‘hammery.’ No, it’s not a word.
Shawn Robinson holds one for the camera. Look how high his clutch lever is!
Tyler Medaglia gets bonus points for basically flat-landing this thing!
Soooo smooth from Cade Clason.
Swanson was pacing Brett Metcalfe here so we’ll cut him some slack.
Michael Da Silva with the ‘look back’ whip.
Schmoke could do this all day.
Colton Facciotti has a little fun.
Seth Rarick was too busy getting used to his new Yamaha 450 to play games with us.
Not too far, Tyler!
Eric Jeffery with a classic ‘straight leg’ cross-up.
Bobby Kiniry trying to get back to the ground asap.
You can just picture this one in motion, can’t you?
Welcome back, Kyle!
Graham Scott gets into it.
Davey with the Jeffery copy.
I get the feeling Michael was thinking about what to do about 5 corners before the jump.
See…all day!
Colton dipping his toes in the tub.
Hayden goes with a ‘turndown’ this lap.
It may have been this one that took Tyler over the edge like a 90-metre ski jumper!
Brett Metcalfe with the ‘look over’ no less!
See above Dylan comment…
Riley Brough shows us his Utah style.
This one is a little ‘affected’ but still nice. (Google it, Bowker!)
Colton with a carbon copy.
Not a massive whip, but a tear off pull is always nice to capture.
I joked with Eric later that his ‘look over’ happened on the take off. LOL
Speaking of ‘hammery…’
Matthew Davenport asked if I got any where he doesn’t look like a ‘goon.’
There’s a classic.
Nope, this is the one! Bombs away, Matti Nykanen! (Google that too, Bowker!)
I think Dylan is still in Ulverton doing this right now.
Robinson with a nicely understated ‘look over.’
Hayden with his best Bob Hannah impression.
Riley shows his ‘swag game.’ And it’s pretty darn swaggy!
Cade holding one over the edge.
Tandem whips.
Chapter 2.
Taylor Ciampichini really likes hanging way over the front in the air. That’s all we have for this year. Let’s make sure this place is on the schedule next year!
