Style Check – Calgary Whip Contest
By Billy Rainford
This week’s coverage of the MX Nationals is sponsored by BlackfootDirect.com. Be sure to check them out.
OK, so there is no ‘official’ Whip Contest, but there are two specific jumps on the circuit that lend themselves nicely to us having some fun like this – Ulverton in Quebec and the International Jump on the Wild Rose MX track in Calgary. I look forward to standing beside this marquee jump every year during first practice to see who will take the current year’s title.
Be sure to let us know who you think the winner is for 2015, and watch for this again when we head to Quebec.
#20 Dylan Wright just getting warmed up.
#75 Nick Collins.
#1 Kaven Benoit heating things up.
#762 Blake Savage keeping it serious for this lap.
#14 Shawn Maffenbeier.
#444 Dustin Creson.
#24 Kyle Swanson.
#9 Morgan Burger is always up for an impromptu whip contest.
We all know #105 Jimmy Decotis can throw it farther than this.
Decotis again.
Wright letting one sail.
No, not a whip, but still counts.
The ‘look over’ always helps earn extra points.
#39 Jess Pettis getting in on the action.
Wright is tough to beat in this sort of thing.
Maffenbeier with some ‘leg swag.’
#621 Kyle Springman didn’t get the memo, but he still looks good.
#84 Teagan Williams.
Decotis hangs himself off the side.
#32 Jared Petruska could be entered on both a 250 and a 450.
A classic Burger.
#90 Jared Stock with a little ‘body whip’ to help his score.
And #620 Brad Nauditt is on the board!
Decotis with a solid classic.
#21 Jeremy Medaglia gets full points for this one.
A little askew AND the helmet adjustment by #476 Collin Jurin.
#186 Ray Obermeyer just getting warmed up.
#613 Kyle Skelton.
#33 Shawn Robinson.
#5 Teddy Maier volunteered to help score on this one by #36 Hayden Halstead.
#123 Brett Metcalfe keeping things serious.
#12 Vince Friese lets one drift a little.
Likewise for #761 Cade Clason.
#148 Cole Thompson thinking about next lap.
#195 Scott Champion is just warming up here, but he’s showing he came to play.
Maybe not Colton Facciotti’s best whip but the big #1 sure helps.
#26 Michael Da Silva has to be different and throw one the other way.
I don’t think #2/800 Mike Alessi was feeling up to getting crazy during practice.
Robinson goes for the combo, adding the ‘look over.’
Friese starting get a little looser.
Metcalfe decides to get involved.
#7 Bobby Kiniry going for distance on this one.
#101 Matt Goerke getting set to play along.
This one by Champion night be tough to beat.
Facciotti again.
Maier having some fun.
Another smooth classic from Friese.
Last year, #49 Brock Hoyer was all over this! He apologized later in the day.
Thompson again. He just didn’t feel like getting wild Sunday.
Metty again.
#69 Eric Jeffery has one to score.
#3 Tyler Medaglia.
Goerke with a nice classic.
#23 Dylan Schmoke may have been the 2014 Ulverton winner. It was close!
Teddy thinks he’s the winner.
I like Cade’s enthusiasm here.
Hey, Brock, answer the phone…it’s 1996 calling.
I like this one from Bobby.
#55 Keylan Meston with a late entry.
This was all the ‘playing around’ Alessi could muster Sunday.
Yep, looking good, Vince.
Is it just the colour or are Scott’s whips pretty sweet?
I always enjoy a little whip/tear-off pull shot.
I think this has to be the one that counts for Cole.
That’s more like it, Keylan!
Metcalfe and Jeffery pretty much touched in the air here. It was close! OK, it’s up to you to pick a winner. Let us know over on the Direct Motocross Facebook page.
