Photo Report: 2015 Detroit SX

With live television coverage these days, it’s hard to come up with a ‘race report’ that won’t be more of the same. With that in mind – and the fact that it’s now Wednesday – I thought I’d try something different for this event.
The race was a few days ago now, so let’s see what the individual riders had to say about the event via Twitter and Instagram. Here’s what the top 10 in both classes had to say afterward.
250 East Main
10th – #79 Jace Owen
Damn this set up was on point tonight. Landed myself another top 10 ride tonight. Can’t wait to keep the ball rollin and lookin forward to another close race this weekend in St Louis.
9th – #49 Jimmy Decotis
“Speeds finally coming back around for this guy. Still got lots to work on and keep progressing. One year doing it right and I’m seeing gains.”
8th – #52 Mitchell Oldenburg
“With all the bad things that have happened recently in this sport I’m so thankful to be safe after this practice crash! Really wanted to call it a day after that but momma didn’t raise no quitter! When the going gets tough, the tough get going!”
7th – #35 Kyle Cunningham
@KCunningham_19 grabs a 7th, @JStarling77 gets a season best 12th, and @kylepetersmx came back strong to a 13th!
6th – #986 Colt Nichols
“Good step in the right direction for me tonight. It was my birthday so I had to do good, 2nd in the heat and 6th in the main. I think it was my @treycanard edition boots. Bummin for my fellow Oklahoman after his crash tonight, but pumped for my boy @captain891 on his big win.”
5th – #62 Anthony Rodriguez
“Thanks to everyone that’s helped me get to were I am!! Blessed thank you lord”
4th – #6 Jeremy Martin
“Big #TBT to the good old days of unlimited supplies of junk food! Haha” (Nothing Detroit related. Jeremy needs to up his Twitter game)
3rd – #37 Joey Savatgy
“Forgot to take my mouthpiece out.. Oops.. But a solid weekend, every weekend I learn and get better. My team is amazing, and my mechanic @j_shan_ puts together a beast of a bike.. Finally got off the gate decently lol.. Another week of homework at the farm! “
2nd – #25 Marvin Musquin
“Another good night of racing in Detroit. I was able to get a 2nd place with a bad start. Thanks @foxheadinc once again for the sweet gear!”
1st – Justin Bogle
“Blessed to do what I love for a living. This feeling is why I work so dang hard every day, nothing compares.”
If you win the main, you get as many photos in the report as is necessary…
Honorable mention to #80 RJ Hampshire who won his qualifier. “Bummed on how the main ended up but I felt awesome all day. Each weekend I’m feeling better and better! I’m having a blast out there and can’t thank everyone helping me out enough! So thankful and blessed to be doing what I love. On to St. Louis!”
#240 Bryce Stewart wound up 18th in the main.
#423 Vicki Golden was off the pace in Detroit and didn’t make the night show. “Out here at #castilloranch with frankiegarcia24 Trying to get these whoops figured out.”
#47 Martin Davalos did not have a good night. “Things will get better, sometimes u just have to keep getting back up on this tough times”
Teammates, #6 Martin and #62 Rodriguez, scrapping during a race early in the night.
250 podium: Savatgy 3rd, Musquin 2nd, Bogle 1st.
On to the 450 Main…
450 Main
10th – #10 Justin Brayton
“Felt great to be back at the races. Solid laps and a top ten is a good start. Thankful for all the support from my family, friends, and team. Looking forward to St.Louis.”
9th – #29 Andrew Short
This is from last week: “Dear world. I have been doing third gear starts for two years. @byrner26 taught me how right before San Diego last year.”
8th – #4 Blake Baggett
Blake does a lot of re-tweeting. Not a lot to go on here.
7th – #20 Broc Tickle
Nothing new since Indy from Broc Tickle.
6th – #33 Josh Grant
“Had so much fun riding outdoors out at pala the last couple weeks. Looking forward to the summer!”
5th – #18 Davi Millsaps
“Happy bday to this crazy guy and one of my best friends @scuba821” (Hey, it was all I had to go with!)
4th – #22 Chad Reed
“Browsing my timeline is interesting after the weekend Getting tagged on track safety, riders union, 4 strokes are the devil blah blah..”
3rd – #14 Cole Seely
“Another good night!”
2nd – #5 Ryan Dungey
“Great night of racing here in Detroit. Came away with a 2nd tonight, solid night and moving forward!”
1st – #3 Eli Tomac
“We had an amazing night in Detroit thanks team!”
Here’s the pass for the lead in the 450 Main.
And that was it…
Canadian Content: #722 Adam Enticknap was ready to go Saturday on his Cycle North Honda but ended up damaging his rad beyond help in the Semi and missed the main.
I could have stood in this sandy corner all all day but had to force myself to walk away and take pics of a different section. #199 Kyle Partridge saved this, by the way, and finished 13th.
#23 Weston Peick had the speed again in Detroit but not the luck. “Tough ending to my night in Detroit, speed was there all day just a little mistake put me here (Vital MX crash pic). Thankfully no broken bones.”
#392 Mike Fowler races some of our Canadian Nationals.
Tough break for #12 Jake Weimer in Detroit. The end result was a pretty long grocery list of injuries: “Hello everyone, Jacob wanted me to give you guys an update. He has suffered a concussion, a mild pneumothorax in his left lung, split open his chin pretty good, a fractured Adam’s apple, bruised vocal chords and a blood clot in his throat, and to end the list a broken right humerus. He had a successful surgery yesterday morning where they plated his arm. Thank you so much for all the love and support, he’s having a difficult time talking so he wanted to let everyone know if you have called or text he will get back to you when he’s feeling a bit better. Hopefully be out of the hospital within a couple days. -Nicole”
#41 Trey Canard was the other rider involved in the crash: “Thumbs down on another broken bone and landing on @jakeweimer12 I know it was just a race incident but shoot! Hoping he’s doing ok. Updates as soon as I know more in my arm. Thanks @ryandungey and @aldon104 for the coffee this morning. Cheers me up to have competitors like these guys.”
I was impressed with #70 Nick Schmidt Saturday. He didn’t roll over when Millsaps tried to get past him early on. He ended up 18th in the main.
#46 Phil Nicoletti looked to have something special going in Detroit. He finished 15th in the main but had the pace of the top 10.
I don’t know if they caught it on TV, but riders hit really hard on the way up into the stands. If you didn’t keep your front end high, this happened.
This maybe the final shot of Michigan’s Nick Wey taking the checkers in Detroit. If it is, I’m glad I was there. He took 12th in the Main. “It was great to see many life long friends and family last night at the race. I am greatly appreciative for the warm reception from all the fans as well. Got our seasons best result of 12th. We will keep working hard to improve.”
The 450 podium: Seely 3rd, Dungey 2nd, Tomac 1st.
See you at the races…
