Off the Cuff with Jacqueline Ross – March 2025

By Jacqueline Ross

Greetings, Humans,

It’s me again. April Fools! Maybe it’s not? It’s been more than a few months since my last column and at this rate I think I’ve evolved into the seven-hundred-thirty-fourth version of myself. Seriously. It’s been quite the ride the last few months. Speaking of ride, literally and figuratively! I started the year off racing moto, yet have been led to the off-road realm! It’s true, God does work in mysterious ways. As time seems to transcend itself and the first quarter of the year just ended, this story that I am about to share is just the right addition.

My circle is small, but it’s filled with the best and most interesting humans. One of them happens to be 97 years young! Her name is Ruthe and she is an incredible person; full of joy and wisdom. Ruthe and I had a lunch party on this particular Thursday. As our visit was coming to an end, Ruthe had walked me to the front door, I gave her a hug, and I had my hand on the door handle. She said, “Wait, turn around, look, outside. Do you see those 3 hibiscus flowers on the tree?” I squinted as I peered outside, “Yeah, they’re pretty.” “Well do you know about them?” Ruthe said. “No,” I responded. Ruthe enlightened me, “Hibiscus live for one day, 24 hours, and then they shrivel and close back up. The tree will continue to produce new blooms, however, each hibiscus flower only lasts for one day (maybe two at the maximum). They make the most out of the day without knowing they’ll be gone in 24 hours.”

Here’s to living each day like a hibiscus flower – open, radiant, and to the fullest.

In full bloom,

Jacqueline
