Monday Morning Coffee
By Billy Rainford
Good morning. There were lots of things that happened over the weekend so let’s get to it. We had an unseasonably warm couple days here (and it’s going to be 18 degrees Celsius again today) so I’m sure most people with bikes were out at a track or trail somewhere!
Chris Blose is Your Canadian National AX Tour Champion
#101 Rockstar Energy OTSFF Yamaha rider, Chris Blose, came into the 2nd year of the Canadian National AX Tour as the odds on favourite, in part because we had a feeling he may be the only rider at his level who would be doing the entire series. At the first two rounds in Ontario, he had his hands full with the likes of #2 Honda Canada GDR Fox Racing rider Colton Facciotti and #12 Slakawear Kawasaki’s Steven Mages. Unfortunately, Colton stayed in Ontario and thrilled everyone in the area by riding a 1985 Honda CR 500 2-stroke at Gopher Dunes and Mages headed over to Europe and won the Dutch Supercross.
The door was opened up for Chris to take this title, but then #20 MX101 FXR Yamaha’s Jess Pettis and #8 FCW FXR Yamaha’s Keylan Meston stepped up their games in the west to give him a run for his money. Both of these riders were a breath of fresh air as they continue to progress in their indoor games against the seasoned veteran, Blose.
Blose won the ‘Clash for Cash’ finale in Penticton and that left him as the only rider capable of taking home the Parts Canada ‘Triple Crown’ $25,000 prize if he could with the next two in Calgary. He looked like he was going to pull it off until he had a small get off at the end of the whoops Friday night. He remounted and then crashed very hard in the same whoops section on the next lap and that was it for his night and his chance at the cash.
Jess Pettis went on to win the Clash Friday night and I thought it was interesting when Ryan Gauld asked him on the podium if it felt good to take the chance at the big money away from Chris. With true Pettis class, Jess simply said he only wanted to win, just like always. I don’t think anyone wants to take away $25,000 from a fellow motocross rider if that means nobody gets it, do they? Or maybe that’s just me and explains why I didn’t make it to the top of the sport…
There were 3 different winners Friday night: Blose won 450, #59 Husqvarna rider Noah McConahy took the 250, and Pettis won the Clash. On Saturday night, it looked like this: Keylan Meston won the 450 and Pettis took the 250 and the final Clash of the year.
We’ll have a full photo report up on the site this afternoon.

Tyler Medaglia Finishes 14th at National Cyclocross Championships in Sherbrooke, Quebec
OK, so we all know by now that Parts Canada Thor Husqvarna rider Tyler Medaglia spends a ton of time in the saddle, but we didn’t really know how he would stack up against guys who were actual Pros in bicycle racing, did we?
Tyler took the Provincial title a couple weeks ago out in Nova Scotia and then set his sights on Sherbrooke and the National Cyclocross Championships. This time of year is classic for Cross Country running and Cyclocross: cold and wet. The Sherbrooke course was wet and wild with riders having to stand on the pedals just to keep the rear wheel rotating – perfect for Tyler.
I spoke to him Sunday afternoon to find out how it went. It did not go smoothly, to say the least.
“I had last gate pick because I was late. I had to switch bikes but came through the pack and got 14th out of 40 on this kid’s bike in the Elite class. I had the wrong tires on my race wheels. When I did my warm up, I didn’t think I was going to be able to even race. Then, this U17 kid told me to ride his bike so I ripped to the line, forgot my transponder, had to get a loaner and didn’t have an elastic, so a chick in the crowd gave me a hair elastic!
“My gate pick was shit anyways but I literally started dead last. I passed a bunch of guys on the first lap. It was fun racing with guys that are Pro in one cycling discipline or another, so I was happy.
“On the second day, I got a better call up for the start and led the first half lap, eventually getting 8th. It was a Quebec Cup but pretty much everyone rode both days and in day 2 we raced with all the U23 and Master +30, so I actually had a much better race. I was battling with people that race Pro full-time.
“Heidi had to make bread this morning so my friend and I had to be back by 5am. We drove straight home after the race and got in at 3:30am!”
I told him it’s all part of the memories from the weekend that will probably never fade. Ask him about this specific weekend 10 years from now and he’ll tell this story in pretty much the exact same words, I bet.
Then, just to get him going, I said, “Hey, do you remember when you used to race moto?”
He said, “I still do! This time of year is Cross though. The secret to having a long mx career is to have other things in your life.” I couldn’t agree more.
Go Vote for Mitch Goheen in the Racer X Film Fest
Mitch Goheen, from Just Giver Productions, could use your vote!
“Please vote for Mitchell’s video every single day. Thank you for your help. His is the one with the #3 on the bike.”
What to Watch for this Coming Week
Next weekend is going to be jam packed with Supercross action from around the world!
Australian SX | The Return of Ryan Villopoto
Paris – Lille Supercross
Tampere Supercross (Finland) | Ryan Lockhart and Kyle Springman
German Supercross (Stuttgart) | Cade Clason
Endurocross in Boise, Idaho | Can Shelby Turner Keep on Winning?!
Speaking of Boise, if you’re looking for a ridiculous comedy series to watch on Netflix, I’ve been enjoying ‘The Grinder.’ It takes place in Boise and stars Rob Lowe and Fred Savage (Yes, from The Wonder Years). I think it’s hilarious but it only made it for one season, just like all the other shows I seem to enjoy…
Wait, where was I…
We’ll be sure to post links to any live coverage of these events we find as we get closer to this rather big weekend of racing action.
