It’s time for another Monday Morning Coffee where we talk about what happened in Motocross and usually much more…
By Billy Rainford
The stuff I wore at the Foxborough Supercross is still in a garbage bag in the back of the van. I don’t think I ever want to see it again. Nah, that’s not true. I think I actually had a smile on my face all day and night on Saturday. Like I always say, a mud race is fun once in a while…once in a very long while.
I understand SX is supposed to be the clean and neat brother of MX, but I didn’t complain when the forecast called for constant rain at Gillette Stadium for Round 12 of the SMX World Championship. I decided early to only carry 1 camera and to get it all covered and safe with a rain bag. I also made sure to bring my 100% waterproof pants and jacket as well as my rubber boots, so I stood a chance of staying dry the entire time. It worked!
The only trouble I had was that sometimes the mud would do its best to rip the boots right off my feet, and I almost fell down a couple times when the slipperiness of the wet and muddy plywood caught me off guard. I didn’t fall and I didn’t pull a groin, so everything was fine.
Before I forget, I have to tell a story about how our day started…

Jordan Wilsey from RussOgraphy was on hand to take care of the video shooting at this round (he’ll also be in New Jersey and in Pittsburgh). He left early Saturday morning to make it there from Saratoga Springs, NY. I, of course, drove the day before in the DMX Van. Yes, it made it on another round trip.
Anyway, we went to the required safety meeting but then the schedule had been so delayed due to the weather that we found ourselves with like 5 hours before bikes were going to hit the track so we went to a restaurant in the plaza that is connected to the stadium.
I had just eaten on the way to the track so I was just getting coffee. Jordan grabbed himself a meal and we sat there and shot the breeze for a while.
When he finished, I told hime to put his wallet away. He was about to stand in the pouring rain for hours so DMX could have some cool video to post. I told him it was the very least I could do to grab his meal for him.
Guess who left his wallet in the photo den? Yep, this guy. Not only did Jordan have to pay for his food but he had to get my coffee too! Christina Denney had told me that Kourtney Lloyd was there and I knew she’d really get a kick out of that story when she heard it.
It turned out there actually was less I could do!
It never really poured hard on Saturday but then again it never really stopped either. It was a constant rain that left the track crew nothing more they could do to make this race…raceable. It was going to be one of those days where if you managed to only fall a couple times, you could do well. And that’s what happened.
When I got settled in the photo den, there was someone new sitting just behind me so we got chatting. Her name was Brittany Johnson and she is the mother of #177 Kade Johnson. She got the opportunity to see the action from the floor and was pumped to watch her son go out and see what he could do.
I didn’t think a whole lot more about it until the checkered flag wave in the SMX Next Main.
#18 Landen Gordon has been the class of the field in the “Futures” class this season. He pulled the holeshot but found himself down and at the back of the pack when the race got going.
Believe it or not, he managed to claw his way through the entire field and was in the lead on the final lap. Unfortunately for him, he ran into trouble and that allowed none other that #177 Kade Johnson to get back out front and take the win. It was brutal for Gordon but absolutely amazing for young Johnson. What a perfect experience for him and his family with Brittany down on the floor taking it all in!
Picking up 3rd was #46 Luke Fauser who you’ll remember raced in Canada last summer.

#1 Tom Vialle headed into the round with a nice 15-point cushion in 250 East Regional action. And we all assumed it would grow by at least 3 more points due to his skill in these terrible conditions. Unfortunately, mud races can produce strange results and when all was said and done he left Boston tied in points with #56 Seth Hammaker and just 2 points ahead of #24 RJ Hampshire!
By the way, on the drive to Gillette Stadium from the direction I came, you go right through a little town called Hopkinton. If you know anything about a little race called the Boston Marathon, it’s where the race starts and everyone poops in the locals’ bushes.
#10 Chance Hymas hangs out with our guy Dylan Wright down in Florida. He went into this one knowing he’s fast in muddy conditions and looked right from the outset.

The big stories from the 250 class during the day were new Partzilla PRMX rider #62 Mark Fineis taking to qualifying spot out of Group B and the mud skills of #734 Dayton Briggs!

Brigs headed out in first place in the Main and looked like this could be a Cinderella story for him. He led the first couple laps but then fell victim to the conditions and dropped way back. He hung around at the stage to get his holeshot cheque but he was so upset with himself.
I shot video of him there fighting the tears and shot this photo of him, just crushed:

I’ll get into more details in another article, but I just wanted to touch on these couple stories here in the MMC.

In the 450 class, I didn’t realize #94 Ken Roczen‘s right ankle was also hurt so badly, so when he left qualifying early I thought he’d injured something in Foxborough. Turns out, he’d just aggrevated it even more.
We all knew heading into this one that #7 Aaron Plessinger was smiling under that rain wet and mud-soaked helmet of his. Being such a skilled Enduro rider, he was poised to continue his 2025 roll.

What we didn’t see coming was the 2nd place finish by #12 Shane McElrath! What a night he had.

I hate to say it, but the longrange forecast for Philadelphia this week is…lots of rain on Friday and then cold and cloudy on Saturday with not much rain. We’ll see…

OK, let’s end it there. I hope that got you through a nice Monday Morning Coffee. I hope most of us have working camera equipment for next round in Philly.
