Monday Morning Coffee Opinion Column

Grab yourself another cup for this week’s Monday morning Coffee where we talk about some of what happened in Motocross and usually more…

By Billy Rainford

I hope everyone had a good weekend. I had big plans for outdoor activities but the weather had other plans for me here in SWO. The only thing I really managed to do was get Olive over to the dog park a couple times. Winter decided to return and we dipped below the freezing mark for most of the time. In fact, it snowed for a while here Sunday night!

In the Frid’Eh Update I mentioned the AVL Racing Team out of New Brunswick. The team will feature both #28 Sam Gaynor and #377 Daniel Elmore in the 450 class this summer. Sam has worked equally as hard to come back from this horrible wrist injury as anyone I’ve ever heard of in our sport. Did you know he was just in a solid cast for 4 whole weeks?!

I spoke to him on the phone for a while to catch up. Like most competitive athletes, Sam doesn’t want to whine at all about what he’s been going through but he has agreed to do a podcast interview with me this week to go through it all. Head over to his Instagram page for the Cole’s Notes version and then listen to what he has to say once we have our talk.

As for Daniel, he’s currently down at Moto Bros in Punta Gorda, Florida. He actually just did a nighttime money race at the track and took home the 4th place cash against some stiff competition, as he said. I fell like we’ve not talked about Daniel in our initial build up to the upcoming season. We’re going to fix that and also have a chat this week. Daniel has shown he can be a top 3-5 guy, so he should be in the conversation when talking about hitters in the 450 class this summer.

The biggest news of the weekend didn’t happen on the track, it happened behind the wheel of a fast car. 19-year-old Haiden Deegan got nabbed for “street racing/stunt driving” in Florida.

Who here hasn’t done donuts in a parking lot…for hours! And when things went front-wheel-drive who didn’t discover backwards donuts? A lot of the time, I was either doing them in a Lada or a 1984 Chrysler minivan! And I’m sure you’ve all tried to “chirp the tires” in ever gear if you drove a standard. I can’t even imagine the chaos I would have caused if I could have afforded an Audi R8! (Weird, an Audi commercial just came on the radio in the background)

What I’m saying is, yes, it’s silly, but who hasn’t?! If anything, this will increase his street cred tenfold.

As they say: Good or bad, as long as they’re talking! And it looks like even the mainstream is. Check out this post from none other than People.com:

Motocross Star Haiden Deegan, 19, Shares His Mugshot on Instagram After Being Arrested for Street Racing and Stunt Driving

Motocross star Haiden Deegan was arrested for street racing and stunt driving in Florida.

The 19-year-old shared a photo of his Walton County booking record and mugshot on his Instagram Stories on Saturday, March 22.

The virtual document shows that Haiden was charged with violating a “street racing/stunt driving law” on the evening of Friday, March 21, at approximately 10 p.m. local time.

The post also reveals that he paid a bond of $1,000 and was released from police custody in the early morning hours of Saturday, March 22.

The two-time 250cc SMX Champion wrote “Certified stunt driver” along with the sob-face emoji across the top of the image, which was accompanied with the Inner Circle song “Bad Boys.”

The Walton County Sheriff’s Office confirmed Haiden’s arrest to PEOPLE on Saturday, and said that his car “will be impounded for 30 days.” The department also noted that the sheriff’s deputy who interacted with Haiden described him as being “respectful during the entire encounter.”

Haiden, who was born in Temecula, Calif., has been racing professionally since 2022.

He made his professional debut at Ironman in August 2022, and he is currently racing for Monster Energy Yamaha Star Racing, per his bio page on Racer X.

Some of his racing awards include 2023 AMA 250SX Rookie of the Year and three career SuperMotocross World Championship 250SMX Wins, according to the site.

Haiden is the son of famous motocross star and X Games legend Brian Deegan, 50. His older sister Hailee Deegan, 23, is also a racing star, competing in the 2025 Indie NXT.

According to NBC Sports, Haiden currently leads the Monster Energy 250 West championship by 12 points over 19-year-old rider Julien Beaumer.

He is next expected to race in the 250SX West Division in Seattle on Saturday, March 29, per the Motocross news site Vurbmoto.

I posted this People article over on our Facebook page to see what everyone had to say.

And does anyone remember how you treated a rental car when you opted for the FULL COVERAGE?! I have photos of people with all 4 wheels in the air at the Mini O’s in their rental. What I’m saying is, we’re all motocross riders here. We’re all a little bit crazy or we would never have thrown a leg over a dirt bike in the first place.

And as they say: “You don’t have to be crazy to do this sport, but it certainly helps!

The thing is, he did it and got caught. You just have to be smarter than that. Another line I’ve always adhered to is this: “Never break more than 1 law at a time.” Sage words.

It looks like he’s sat down to tell us all about it and it will be live on his IG and YouTube channel at 3:00pm Eastern time today. He’s wearing a shirt with his mugshot on it. I bet those things are selling like hotcakes! (…now if we can just get them to sell like t shirts.) #dadjokes

FIM Oceania Women’s Motocross Cup

FIM Oceania photo

I was interested to see how this stacked team from the USA would fair agains some of the other fast riders when they raced the 4-nation FIM Oceania Women’s Motocross Cup in Australia over the weekend. With a roster of Jordan Jarvis, LaLa Turner, Kyleigh Stallings, Jamie Astudillo, and off-road racer Mikayla Nielsen.

It turns out there is an Australian rider even faster than Jordan and LaLa! If you’ve ever seen them ride, that’s a big deal. Charli Cannon is that rider and she swept the motos. I’m still trying to find some video highlights from the weekend, but haven’t been able to as of this column. If you find them, please post the link on our FB page under this column.

Tyler Gibbs IN for Seattle Supercross

I gave Abbotsford, British Columbia, rider Tyler Gibbs a call this morning to talk about racing the upcoming Seattle Supercross this Saturday at Lumen Field. He was actually on his way to the Yamaha test track when we spoke.

He’s staying in Menifee, California, at longtime friend/billet/coach/supporter Kevin Urqhart‘s place and it turns out he was sitting beside Tyler during our speaker-phone conversation.

Arriving in California just over a week ago, Tyler only had a couple days on the bike before rain came in and closed the tracks for a few days.

He’ll be on a stock Yamaha 250F from GA Checkpoint with some suspension he got through Washington State rider Collin Jurin (also racing this weekend). The suspension actually came from our old friend Brad Nauditt and they were cool enough to loan it to Tyler for the race.

Kevin will be at the race this weekend along with Tyler’s dad, Paul Gibbs. It’s an open-roof stadium so we all joked about it being a “slightly” risky idea to hold this even in the Pacific Northwest in springtime.

Tyler will also race the Canadian Triple Crown Series MX Nationals in 2025. He will travel with his younger brother, Travis Gibbs, who will be an Intermediate on the line in the 250 Pro/Am class. The plan is to be in a Sprinter van with the possibility of a trailer in tow. They aren’t entirely sure of all the details just yet. He’ll have the support of GA Checkpoint, Fox Racing Canada, and Yamaha Motor Canada for the effort.

Good luck this weekend, Tyler.
