Monday Morning Coffee Opinion Column

It’s time for Monday Morning Coffee where we talk about some of what happened in Motocross over the weekend and usually more…

By Billy Rainford

Hey, did you watch the racing Saturday night? 🤯

Normally, I dislike the Triple Crown format. Normally, I’m on the track trying my best to capture the racing action and following along from trackside is difficult enough with just 1 Main for each class. 6 Mains altogether makes it very difficult to cover and sort out without the benefit of the announcers on TV.

Fortunately, I was comfortably seated on my couch for Round 7 of the 2025 Monster Energy AMA Supercross at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, part of the SMX World Championship and I loved it!

Let’s first talk about the 2 Canadians we had representing the maple leaf in Texas:

#61 Cole Thompson:

Q: 6th

Races: 11, 13, 14

Overall: 13th

Point Standings: 15th

This track needed throttle control and skill in the tricky rhythm sections and that’s where Cole shines. I can’t remember the last time he qualified as high as 6th, but this technical track really let him shine.

#800 Preston Masciangelo:

Q: 34th

LCQ: 9th

Going into the Triple Crown format, you knew it was going to be difficult for Preston to get into the action, but he keeps learning and getting more comfortable. As long as he keeps meeting his goals, this season will be a huge success for the rider representing Brantford, Ontario. In case you didn’t know, it’s where Wayne Gretzky is from.

I’m on my way down to Florida as you read this. Yes, “one more time in the little red van...” I have a bad ABS sensor on the wheel where the tire blew up when the parking brake was stuck. I still haven’t replaced the wheel-well liner and so the whole area is just pummelled by the elements as I drive it. I tell you this because it means I don’t have cruise control! I’m that guy who keeps speeding up and slowing down while everyone else is nice and steady.

Since 2015, I think the van has been to Florida twice a year, so this means I’m closing in on 20 times down to Florida from Ontario. This van doesn’t owe me a thing!

Hold that thought…

Well, I’m pulled over at the Bowling Green University exit here in Ohio. I pulled off the I-75 to grab some gas and my rear brakes went from “Hmm, I might need to look at my rear brakes” to “My brakes are going to wear right through the rotors any second” in the blink of an eye.

As you can imagine, I’m trying not to spend any money on this van because a new one is on its way any time now… But this doesn’t sound like it can wait so I’ll get these things fixed right here at this Midas service centre.

It’s already climbed to 7 degrees Celsius, so it’s a nice change from the deep freeze we’ve been in the past few weeks in Ontario.

My plan was to talk more about the racing on Saturday in Arlington, but it wouldn’t be a quick chat, so I’m not going to get into that right now. I can see that we’re already past my non Eastern self-imposed deadline, so I’m going to leave it here.

Wishing you well, Chad Saultz.

I do want to wish our old friend #364 Chad Saultz well as he had a chain break on him at the worst time and he suffered a bad crash.

I’m hearing lots of second-hand information about a couple fractures in his neck and spine, but I don’t have any more information. We’ll let you know more as soon as we hear something. Chad and his dad have been supporters of DMX for many years and their pit is one of my first stops to chat when I get to the races.

Jordon Smith took a hard one in Texas, too. He gave an update on his Instagram page:

OK, I know that wasn’t a whole lot to get you through another cup this morning or afternoon, but I’m hoping to get back on the road ASAP and get myself to Pax Trax for the Moto Money Race on Wednesday. This little unscheduled stop will mean I have to drive deeper into the night than I was planning, but it’s nothing I haven’t dealt with in the past. Wish me luck!

Cooper Webb is alone on top of the 450 point standings now, so he has the honours: “See you at the races...” | Align with Us photo

PS A guy took the van for a drive to see what it needs and has been gone for 20 minutes now. He would have heard the grinding as he left the parking lot, so I’m not sure what he’s doing. He’s probably downtown selling my camera equipment and the 2 beautiful Scott bikes in the back…
