It’s time for another Monday Morning Coffee where we talk about what happened in Motocross and usually a lot more, so grab a cup.
By Billy Rainford
If you missed that night of racing at A2, you ned to go back and watch the archive. Not the highlights, the entire night. We were treated to some of the best racing we’ve seen in a long time on Saturday night at Angel Stadium.
It seems like, in the end, it was all systems normal with Haiden Deegan winning the 250 Main and Jett Lawrence winning the 450 Main, but it was so much more than that.
We’ve got a really nice little battle of the minds going on between Deegan and even younger phenom Julien Beaumer. We’re seeing head games in practice, qualifying, heats, and Mains with these two, and it’s been entertaining to say the least.

Beaumer is Elias and Deegan is Barnes. It’s good vs. evil. Not that Deegan is evil, by any means, but I don’t think you’d argue that he enjoys the role of the bad guy. I’m sure you could come up with a 1980’s WWF(E) version of this battle, too, if you’d like.
I’m on record as calling Haiden “The Truman Show” because he has grown up in the eye of the public through his YouTube channel. Is there a chance he has a hard time distinguishing between fiction and reality? I don’t know, but it makes for a fun angle to exploit in editorial columns like our MMC.
Deegan said Julien “Ran his mouth” last week, further pushing the tete a tete. Haiden likes to get in the heads of his rivals. He’s the guy that likes to think he is better under pressure. I used to play pool with a guy like that. I hated him!
If I ran the table down to the 8 ball and he had all 7 balls left to sink, he was the type of guy who could bear down and run the damn table for the win. He was a “pressure player” and seemed to thrive when his back was to the wall.
I think Haiden has that mindset where you can never count him out. It’s the kind of thing that will serve him very well throughout his career.
But hold on! What do you think about the NKOTB Cole Davies?! In my opinion, this young New Zealander has the makings of another pressure player in the making. He’s still just 17 and looks like a seasoned pro out there, if you ask me.
I love how he looks like he’s not even paying attention when he’s getting interviewed. He just wants to get back with his people and move on to the next race. He sounds like Chad Reed (Yes, I know the difference between Australia and NZ) and I don’t think anyone is going to be able to get in his head to mess him up.
Yes, he got lucky with Jordon Smith crashing over the bars in the whoops, but hearing how short Cole was with answer when asked if he thought he would have a podium this soon was great.
We’ve got a lot of over-30’s at the top of the 450 class who will have to move on with life eventually. What I’m seeing in the 250 class tells me that we are in good hands for the future of the premiere class. We’ll definitely miss them when they’re gone, but the racing is not going to suffer!
We had 5 Canadians lining up at A2. Here’s a look at how they did:

#61 Cole Thompson – Brigden, Ontario
Q: 23
Heat 2: DNF
LCQ: DNS
Obviously, something was wrong with Cole at A2. I spoke briefly with Chris Elliot and he told me that Cole was “super sick all day” and that he had tweaked his back in that Heat 2 crash forcing him out. You know when Cole qualifies back in 23rd that something is off.
Cold or flu has been ravaging riders out in California and Cole was the lastest victim of it.

#800 Preston Masciangelo – Brantford, Ontario
Q: 32
Heat 1: 10th
LCQ: 3rd
Main: 21st
It was amazing to see Preston make it into his first-ever 250 Main at A2. We’ve all known him since he was a little kid chasing the dream and to see it all come true for him on Saturday was amazing. I gave him a call on Sunday to talk about it and you can listen to our conversation wherever you find your podcasts.
He was one of the few riders who was actually slower in Q2, so his Q1 time is what got him into the night show. He was way at the back off the start in Heat 1, but pushed his way up to 10th, just 6.6 seconds out of a direct transfer in 9th.
He grabbed the holeshot in the LCQ and got a ton of air time on the broadcast. It was so cool to see! He got passed by Gavin Towers and Josh Varize to take 3rd and head to the Main.
He was almost on the outside gate for the Main but actually got off to a very good start as he swept around the outside of turn 1 with some really impressive confidence. Unfortunately, things got tight and he was pushed wide and crashed, going over the bars and dropping to the back of the pack.
He rode well but could only muster a 21st at the flag. Making your first Main brings with it the benefit of the intangible of confidence. Preston will put this experience to good use moving forward.
It’s his AJE Motorsports GasGas team’s home race this weekend in Arizona, so you know he’ll want to perform well again.

#500 Julien Benek – Mission, BC
Q: 19th
Heat 2: 15th
LCQ: 9th
Julien is back in action after sustaining multiple injuries in a preactice crash in Georgia. He told us in a pre-season interview that he hoped to be back on the line in late January, and that’s exactly what he did. His knee is still sore, and he caught the sickness going around, but he was on the line and looked good.
He went from the back of the pack to 9th in the LCQ and will be in the Main with a better start soon.
We grabbed him for an interview on Sunday, too, and it’s already up on our channels:

#585 Blake Davies – Mission, BC
Q: 33rd
Heat 2: 11th
LCQ: 10th
Blake is just 16 years old and is picking up the Supercross game quickly. He qualified one spot behind Preston and headed to the night show. He was in Heat 2 with Cole and Julien and also got off to a bad start. He managed to charge his was up to 11th (7.5 seconds out of 9th) and was off to the LCQ.
He had another bad start and was back in 16th early, but fought his way to 10th by the checkered flag to take another step forward in his development as a pro at this level.

#551 Guillaume St Cyr – Victoriaville, Quebec
Q:54th
Poor ‘Guac’ is just trying to ride with that separated shoulder he suffered at A1. He put in a bunch of laps in qualifying, so that was a good sign, at least. However, he’s just not able to ride at the level needed at this level, especially with 2 sets of whoops this week.
Hopefully, with another week of recovery, he can get himself in the kind of shape he needs to be in.
Unfortunately, we’re heading to a Triple Crown event this week in Phoenix, so the chances of making it into the night show are even more difficult.

We don’t have any Canadians racing the 450 class, but the racing was fantastic! Justin Cooper came out of the LCQ and grabbed a huge holeshot to lead the field early. Jett Lawrence messed up in the whoops and dropped back, leaving him with more work to do.
Birthday boy Aaron Plessinger took Dylan Ferrandis down and got his bars caught up in his bike, dropping the pair to the back of the pack. Aaron would be forced out of the race with damage to his throttle.
Jason Anderson got into the lead before the half as Lawrence was also trying to get past Cooper, who would end up finishing 6th.
While all the action was going on up at the front, Eli Tomac (red plate) found himself in last place! He would charge to 7th but would hand the points lead over to…Ken Roczen!
Roczen and Anderson went back and forth while Lawrence squirted away out front. Chase Sexton got himself in the conversation as he closed in on the pair of them, taking 4th at the flag.
Tomac made a pass on Cooper Webb but Cooper was not about to roll over and came back with a charge on Eli to finished right behind him in 7th.
Hunter Lawrence has been sick, as has Anderson, and looked much better this week, riding as high as 2nd early and finishing 5th.
Like I said at the top, if you haven’t watched this one yet, head over and check it out!

The series heads to Reno, Nevada, this weekend for Round 8.
Canadian Jayden Riley was also racing in the Amateur classes:
And I saw #33 Miles Torgrimson from Fletchers Lake, Nova Scotia, in the results. It looks like he had some troubles with a couple 3rd moto DNS listings:

We’re finally out of the deep freeze here in my neck of the woods and we should venture slightly above the zero C mark this week. Is there a chance I get the gravel bike out? Yep. It really sucks here in Canada to get yourself into good riding shape by the end of the summer only to struggle to find the motivation to sit on a stationary bike in these cold months. I don’t have any of the fancy programs, so it’s movies and TV for me when I’m in the saddle in the house. If you never want to die of old age, sit on a trainer because time stands still…
Have a great week, everyone.
We’ll be getting to know #101 Dylan Walsh a lot better this coming summer, so let’s let him and Talon Hawkins say it this time:
