Sit back and enjoy another Monday Morning Coffee where we talk about some of what happened in the sport of Motocross and usually more.
By Billy Rainford
And now the big thaw begins, apparently. After getting more snow than I can remember in the early part of December, it’s currently pouring rain here in London. The main roads have been fine the whole time, but the back roads, and little crescents like ours, have been snow-covered since the start of the snow and are now a sloppy mess.
If you’re reading this from somewhere that doesn’t get snow, now you have an idea why it’s difficult for Canadians to improve at the same rate as riders in other countries. Unless you’re fortunate enough to be able to head south in the winter, we really only have 7-8 months in a year to ride outside.
Growing up, most kids pick a winter sport, like hockey, to concentrate on during the off-season and only get the chance to get back on a bike when the snow has melted in the spring. And you never really know when that’s going to be. Some years it’s in March and others it’s not until late April. It all depends on what happens in our winter months.
With that in mind, I’d like to talk about what we’ve got going on with a very old friend and racing rival of mine, Al Strickert, this winter. He’s going through some sort of late mid-life crisis or something and will be spending the next few months down in Florida riding.
What we’re going to do is have him give us reports from all the different tracks he hits to let us know how they are for Vet riders and riders in general. He’s down there living in his Dodge Promaster van and is riding his mint 2002 Honda CR250 2-stroke, so he’s embracing the Moto Gypsy lifestyle for sure! He’s also on the Planet Fitness program which is a game changer for any gypsy.
His first stop was Monster Mountain in Tallahassee, Alabama. He’s actually still there and has been very impressed with the track and his treatment by the staff down there.
We’ll post up his thoughts once he has time to take it all in.
I spoke to him this morning and he’s on a rain day right now but says that people are all enjoying watching and listening to his 250 2-stroke tear up the place.

I didn’t see any other Canadians racing in Arizona. You can check out the full results HERE.
For those of you who ordered DMX/Team Canada MXON tee shirts and haven’t received yours yet, I’m sorry. The Canada Post strike has messed it all up on us. We’ve got quite a few sitting here at the office in big manilla envelopes waiting to go out.
It’s Week #50 for the DMX Frid’Eh Update Interview, so that means we’ll get our first Update Interview with 2-sport – MX and Snowcross – athlete Crayden Dillon this Friday, so watch for that. The Frid’Eh Updates are brought to you by RP Race Performance.
OK, I hope that got you through another cup of coffee to start the week. If you enjoy scrolling through results sheets like I do, you may have gotten through a couple cups! We’ve got a few irons in the fire around here that are pretty exciting. Have a great week, everyone.
