Our Monday Morning Coffee column is where we talk about things that happened in the sport of Motocross and usually a bit more.
By Billy Rainford
I hope everyone is having a safe trek to Walton Raceway for the 2024 TransCan. I hope those of you coming directly from Loretta Lynn’s are healthy and will have some time to get all your stuff ready to go racing again in short notice. I also hope you spread the word down there and that there are even more riders from the USA coming north to check us out.
We’ve all been calling it the “Drew Adams Effect” since he came up here this summer to race longer motos to get ready for his Pro Sport motos in Tennessee and make for a better transition to the Pro-length motos he’ll be racing very soon at the AMA pro Motocross Championship.
I was really happy to see Drew have such a dominant week at The Ranch. It sort of validated him racing up here this summer. We also hope it is these results that will pave the way for more and more top A Class/Pro Sport riders to cut their teeth in our series.
Sure, it’s been done before by riders about to turn Pro, but this is different because Drew did the entire series and is trying to actually win this title, not just do a couple one-off rounds. Of course, we all remember Dean Wilson doing it back in 2009 when he raced a couple rounds.
Drew just won the 250 and 450 Pro Sport titles at Loretta’s and did it in convincing fashion. He’s been the fastest 250 rider at our Canadian Triple Crown Series MX Nationals, clearly, but Kaven Benoit heads into the final 2 motos with an 8-point lead in the points.
You don’t have to be a math ace to add up that Drew can go 1-1 with Kaven going 2-2 and Kaven will still win this championship by 2 points.
There will be a couple new fast riders on green bikes this week to maybe get involved at the front and help Drew take over this title, but it will be a tall order. #307 Krystian Janik returns and we’ll see Dylan Walsh from Great Britain also on a Kawasaki on the line.
If you’re curious for a look at Dylan Walsh, here’s video from this past weekend’s British MX Championship race at Hawkstone Park (MX2 moto 1 – 2:40:30 MX2 moto 2 – 4:50:00):
And don’t forget that Drew said there are “no friends on the track” for this final round, so we could be in for some fireworks. But also don’t forget that he’s on probation from the pit board protest at MX Deschambault at Round 7 so he’s playing this one with a yellow card.
#402 Gage Linville (-85) and #59 Wyatt Kerr (-93) are also 8 points apart in the battle for 3rd place. Wyatt knows the Walton track and should be fast there, if he can get good starts.

In the 450 class, #15 Jess Pettis has 10 points on his Red Bull KTM Canada teammate #23 Josiah Natzke. Jess had his bike let go on him last year so he’s going to want to bring this one home for a couple reasons. They both go very fast at Walton so this one should also be entertaining.
Back in action should be #1 Dylan Wright. That’s big news! He’ll want to emphasize that there’s an asterisk on this 450 title chase this season. No, I realize you can’t really say that, but some will try. You have to be in it to win it!
#331 Adrien Malaval is still in the area and will race during the week at the TransCan and then the National on Sunday. He was good at Deschambault but should be even better this week after a couple weeks on the bike.
I don’t think he’ll get between Jess and Josiah but he could get between #808 Preston Kilroy and #109 Aaron Tanti in their battle for 3rd place. They’re 36 points apart, so this one is likely just for bragging rights, as Preston looks to have 3rd locked down.
#84 Tanner Ward goes very fast at Walton and went 2-2 to Wright last year. I don’t think he’s going to go up or down in the points as he sits alone in the 5th place spot.
I’ve been having fun all season with the battle between #18 Parker Eales and #377 Daniel Elmore, and this one is going to come down to the last moto this week. They’re just 4 points apart in their battle for 6th. In my mind, the nod goes to Daniel at this track but it will be another dogfight to keep an eye on out there.
#17 Julien Benek is one to watch, too, as he should put himself up ahead of these 2 and go for a top 5 finish to end an increasingly strong summer of racing the 450 class.

Let’s hope we see all these riders on the line this week at the TransCan! Welcome home!
We’ll broadcast the TransCan Opening Ceremonies LIVE on our YouTube Channel Tuesday night starting at 7:00pm Eastern.
I’ll be staying at the track this year, so I’m looking forward to being able to catch all of the nightly activities and do my ‘Race Tech Walk and Talks‘ each night, so it you’re in the pits, be ready to chat! I’ll go over the racing from the day and chat with riders and whoever else as I bump into them in the pits.
OK, I’ve got to get all my ducks in a row for what is going to be a very busy week up in the field at Walton Raceway. Look for the red #DMXVan parked in its usual spot by the tunnel jump and be sure to stop by for a sticker or two!
Good luck to all the racers and families this week.
