Frid’Eh Update #46 | Marco Cannella | Brought to You by RP Race Performance
By Billy Rainford
Welcome to DMX Frid’Eh Update #46 brought to you by RP Race Performance. I’ve been looking forward to this week because the number has been synonymous with this rider for many years. He left the sport a couple years ago, shocking a lot of people in the process. But don’t worry, he’s kept himself busy and may even make a return to the sport at some level in 2025.
I’m currently in Kamloops, BC taking care of my mom for 10 days while my sister takes a holiday. I flew out here on Remembrance Day which is pretty appropriate, since her ailment is an ever-advancing dementia.
They’ve had an above average fall season out here in the mountains just like we have back in Ontario. It’s currently raining today and I’m sure everyone is getting ready for another hairy winter of getting in and out of the Interior on the Coquihalla Highway.
I remember driving here from Vancouver one winter in my Jeep Cherokee. As I approached the gate, I was the last car they let through before closing it because of the snowfall. Although I made it, it was craziest drive I’ve ever made. I was alone in the dark in the mountains as the conditions deteriorated. Jamie Davis wasn’t even a thing yet, I don’t think!
Anyway, we’ve got a lot going on in our sport right now, so we’ll get to it.
As I’m sure you’ve all already guessed, Marco Cannella is the rider who we feature for Week #46. As far as career numbers go, #46 is probably one of the most recognized here in Canada. Marco came up through the ranks as one of our fastest, most successful riders. In his Intermediate year, the was part of what Jeff McConkey always called “The Fab 3.” Marco was joined by Austin Watling and Tanner Ward in this group.
His exit from professional racing a couple years ago was a little rocky. He was dealing with an elbow issue that had everyone guessing what was going on. He was able to race 1/2 of the 2022 season but then stepped away in 2023.
Since then, he’s had his hands full with work and other sporting interests. Here’s what Marco had to say when we contacted him this week:
Direct Motocross: OK Marco, this could be your final Friday Update unless you come back to racing in 2025, so let’s dive in. We won’t make this an official “Where are they Now?” interview, but where are you now? What are you doing for work and where are you living?
Marco Cannella: Hey, Billy. So, right now things have been great. I’m still running my own painting business (prestige painting), so I’ve been working a ton. Also, I’m still living at home with my parents. I’m trying to do that as long as possible and save up some pennies.
You were one of Jeff McConkey’s famed “Fab 3” that included Austin Watling and Tanner Ward. What did you think of that hype back then and why haven’t we seen any pro titles yet?
That’s right, I almost forgot about the fab three. The three of us seemed to be pretty dominant in the last couple years of our amateur careers. It was always fun to be battling with those two and it was good for all three of us to continuously push each other on the weekends to help get us ready for our pro careers. It’s hard to say. A lot of things need to come together to win a championship. I’ve had some close runs and so has Tanner, but, unfortunately, we haven’t been able to pull it off yet.
Looking back over your career, what comes to mind as a highlight?
My Loretta Lynn’s championship is still probably the biggest highlight for me. It’s pretty crazy to think back to winning that first moto with nobody expecting me to do so. I’ve also had a lot of championships at the TransCan as an amateur, years winning three championships which was very dominant going up against a lot of top guys.
As a pro, my first moto win at Gopher Dunes was definitely a highlight, as well as winning motos at Walton Raceway and Sand Del Lee are some of the more memorable races.
In 2022, you ended up 9th in the 250 class but disappeared after the halfway point. Can you tell us what happened that season?
Yes, at Gopher the weekend before I hurt my elbow during one of the motos without crashing or anything, I just tweaked it or hyperextended it and it swelled up pretty badly. I couldn’t ride all week and the following weekend at Sand Del Lee it got a lot worse after pushing it racing all day. It got really bad. I couldn’t move my arm the next day, so I had to go get it checked out and I ended up tearing a ligament in my elbow. I did a bunch of therapy on it but never got it back to a place to be able to go racing again.
And then we didn’t see you again! I know you were looking around and even had a deal sorted with the WLTN Kawasaki team, if I remember. Can you take us through that off season and the decision not to race?
I was extremely close to going racing with Kawi. I had a reasonable offer, considering my results the year prior, but it’s hard to earn a living racing moto if you don’t cash championship cheques. So that combined with losing some of the hunger to race felt like it was time for a change and maybe take some time off and see where we end up.
We met at your place and went for a nice cycle a while back. You were so into it! Are you still cycling? Josh Long was there that day and he was 3rd in the final MTB race of the season this fall at Turkey Point.
Unfortunately, I don’t have as much time having to work full time now so I sold my road bike and just kept my mountain bike around and try to get some occasional rides in. I did love cycling though, it was my favourite form of training for moto, and having Josh come out for some rides always helped. He’s a machine; it’s pretty crazy actually.
But now you’re totally into Disc Golf, or Frolf as it’s also known. How into it are you? Do you compete all over the place? How many discs do you have? I used to play a lot when I lived in Vancouver. I hope you’re not a roller!
This guy doesn’t have the best roller game, don’t worry! Yeah, I’m definitely heavy into the disc golf life. I played a bunch of tournaments this year and also have hit a couple in the States. It’s a nice way to get some of the competitive itch out. I have too many discs, considering you probably only need 15 in your bag, and I’ve got maybe 120-150.
But now I’m told you have a 2-stroke bike! What’s the plan there?
Yeah, my friend Justin picked up a KTM 300 and let me take it for a spin. I had a lot more fun than I expected to and felt it was time to get myself a bike again. I’ve always been a two-stroke guy but never had a 250 two-stroke, so I decided to pick one up shortly after. It’s still sitting here brand new ready to rock and I’m hoping to get out and break it in this weekend.
How are your parents? It was weird for a while not having them at the Nationals every week.
They are good. My mom’s still working at McMaster University and my dad is trying to be full-time farmer Sam. He’s still painting but he’s got about 100 chickens. I’ve lost track of how many goats, at least 10, and 5 cows, so that’s keeping him quite busy on the weekends .
Wow. What’s the best bike you ever rode?
It’s hard to say. Kevin (Tyler) always gave me great equipment and I felt like we had some solid race machines over the years. Going from amateur to pro, OTSFF put together a really solid bike for me to race at RJ’s. I remember enjoying that a lot as well. But the funnest bike was probably the 144 Matt Crown built for me. I absolutely loved that thing and I actually remember getting the holeshot on it at Motopark in Open Intermediate.
Who is the best rider who never won a title that you can think of, not including yourself?
Off the top of my head, maybe Jimmy D (Decotis) in Canada. He had so much speed when he came here. He would always be crazy fast in qualifying and was constantly on the podium. He probably could have got one if he did another season or two here.
What about best and worst track on the circuit that you raced?
Drumheller was definitely the worst track I ever raced. It might sound funny, but Gopher was probably my favourite track to race on the circuit. I loved the challenge. Deschambault was a pretty close second.
I saw you on Josh Cox’s RM450. Was that what got you itching to ride and maybe race again? How are you on a 450 anyway?
That was actually his brother’s RM 125. He had that thing crazy done up. I couldn’t believe how good it felt and the power it had. But that KTM 300 was what gave me the itch to ride. It was just so much fun to be back on a two-stroke and fun to try a different colour out as well.
Can anyone compete with Dylan Wright next summer?
We have all seen what he can do when he’s healthy, he’s a tough guy to beat. Jess (Pettis) was able to do it this year. Maybe he finds an extra gear on that blue machine and if he can continue to get starts like has in the past I think there should be some fun battles between them. (Josiah) Natzke also has a lot of potential. If he has a good off season I could see him staying in the fight as well.
Do you have any regrets looking back over your career? Anything you wish you’d done but didn’t?
I wouldn’t say regrets because it’s always easy to look back and see things clearly. It would have been fun to try a Supercross and Pro National in the States, and win an outdoor overall here. I had so many close calls but it would have been nice actually get one. I really did always work really hard and tried to put my best foot forward, so it’s hard to regret anything when you do that.
Also, not a regret, because I never got an opportunity, but I did always wanna race for KTM and have a run at the series on an orange machine.
OK, if I think of anything else to ask you, I’m going to contact you before Friday! Thanks for chatting with us. Do you want to thank anyone before we let you go?
Yeah, for sure. I’ll always wanna thank KT, he stuck behind me and supported me to go racing for a lot of years and we had some really fun times on that team. And my parents for taking me racing growing up. They gave me an opportunity a lot of people never get, so I’ll always thank them for that.
AMA Arenacross Starts Tonight
Kyle Peters looks to become the first rider to win 6 championships in a row when the AMA Arenacross season starts tonight in Reno, Nevada. Last season, the title came down to the final race between Ryan Breece and him. Both are back this season, but I think the biggest news was that none other than Vince Friese is joining the battle this year. Love him or hate him, there’s no denying he brings eyes to every race he’s in.
New this year is the X Pro class that will be for riders on Stark electric bikes. Justin Bogle, Josh Hill, Kalani Humphrey, among others, will make this some great racing.
Also new this year will be the meeting of electric and gas powered in the Kicker Clash for Cash.
Catch all the action live on Arenacross All Access.
