Frid’Eh Update #4 | Téa Ferguson | Brought to You by Dirt Care
Week #4 belongs to WMX racer and rugby player Téa Ferguson from Manitoba and is brought to you by Dirt Care.
By Billy Rainford

Welcome to Week #4 of the DMX Frid’Eh Update this week brought to you by Dirt Care. We’re currently pulling ourselves out of the deep freeze here in Ontario. With temperatures dipping below -20 Celsius earlier in the week, it felt like the good old days when we’d gather in front of the radio and wait to hear if our school was on the “Closed Due to the Weather” list. There was no feeling better than hearing “Sir John A MacDonald” come through on CJBK AM radio. We couldn’t go to school because of the weather but we were outside the entire day!
It’s not a big deal here when it gets cold, but this snap has reached the shores as far south as Florida! In fact, I feel terrible for the lady across the street who doesn’t take holidays often and finally headed down to Tampa only to be greeted by single-digit weather.
If you’ve been on social media this week, you’ve no doubt seen all the photos and video clips of the practice tracks covered in a few inches of snow. It’s pretty wild.
I just checked our friends at Club MX and they don’t have anything posted showing snow, but Josh Woods down at GPF posted this:
We’ll be back to normal this coming week when we’ll see temperatures up to +5 C. Hopefully, that means everyone who booked time to head to the southeast to prepare for the upcoming 2025 outdoor season gets the weather they’re looking for.
Our buddy Al Strickert who headed down for the moto winter of a lifetime where he’s staying south for 4 months is doing better after having to undergo hip replacement surgery in Florida.
He was hitting different tracks and sending us updates, interviews, photos, and reviews until he crashed in a corner and popped his old man hip. He’s up and about these days and just enjoying some time hanging out at tracks. Unfortunately, he’s only able to watch for the next few months, but at least the surgery was a success and he’s on the mend.

We’re going to do something a little different this week. Canadian Triple Crown Series MX Nationals #4 is Jake Piccolo. I tried to get in touch with him this week but he’s had some different things happen to him the past few months and I guess I can understand their silence. He probably doesn’t feel like answering a whole bunch of “What happened?” or “What are you gonna do with no motocross?!” questions from me. All I can say is that he’s still young and everything will be fine.

I decided to take a look at the results from the 2024 TransCan at Walton Raceway in the Ladies class to see who finished 4th, and that was the youngest of the Ferguson sisters, Téa Ferguson.
I was happy to see that it was her because she has a great story to tell. As one of the 4 racing Ferguson sisters, and the youngest, she’s the one who seems to be improving the quickest over the last couple years. Unfortunately, she’s also the one who had that very scary crash at MX Deschambault in 2023 and made a very strong recovery and return to racing last season.
I got in touch with her late in the week, as I was still waiting to see if I would hear back from any of the Piccolos, so I appreciate her playing along with such limited time to answer my many questions.
Here’s a look at her 2024 season:
WMX West:

TransCan Ladies:

WMX East/West Shootout:

Direct Motocross: Hello, Téa. Thanks for having some fun with us this week. Let’s back it up and let people get to know you a little better. You’re one of the big Ferguson Gang at the races. How many of you are there and where do you fall in the order? How old are you and where are you from?
Téa Ferguson: Hey, Billy! There are 4 of us who make up the Ferguson Racing team. The birth order is Ciel, Ani, Kitty and then me. My mom likes to joke that she’s pretty sure she has 4 kids because my dad desperately wanted a son, jokes on him. Haha. I am 16 years old and we live in a small community 10 minutes south of Winnipeg, Manitoba.
What’s it like being the youngest? I guess you have the benefit of learning from all your sisters, right? Do they get mad when you beat them?
Definitely a benefit! Being the youngest has its pros and cons: pros being spoiled and cons being getting the hand-me-down dirt bikes! On a serious note, sometimes it can be hard to keep up with all the accomplishments they have achieved and feeling like I can’t meet that standard. The pressure can get to me! Although the 4 of us are very competitive on and off the track we are all supportive of each other and I have not run into anyone being upset with me. (Unless they’re hiding it from me!)

How did you all get into Motocross in the first place?
Around when Ciel was 8, my dad came to the full realization that he had four girls and didn’t know what to do with us, so he threw us on dirt bikes! Luckily for him we all loved it.
If you were to take each of your sisters and give us one word to describe each, what would you say?
That is a tough one, there are many different characteristics for each of them so I don’t know how I’d slim it down to one. I would say Ciel is passionate, Ani is disciplined, Kitty is determined and for myself I would say resilient.
You’re also into Rugby, right? Are you as serious about it as MX? What else do you do in your spare time?
With only one school season of rugby under my belt I had the privilege of being invited to try out for the provincial team and competing in the Canada Games. I turned this opportunity down as it conflicted with Walton, but the opportunity and recognition in the offer meant a lot to me. I’m looking forward to continuing to play this spring. Right now it is basketball season which has been keeping me busy! I also work with a trainer 4 times a week in preparation for the motocross season.

OK, you had that really scary crash and injury at MX Deschambault back in 2023. What was that like to come back from that both mentally and physically?
As much as the experience in total was horrible and demoralizing, the process taught me so much. I learnt the importance of discipline, appreciation, patience, forgiving yourself, and so much more. Which were all key factors in winning the battle in my mind and body at the time.
At any point did you consider hanging them up?
Following the accident, this question was asked by many people: doctors, friends, coaches. But to be honest it never even felt like an option. The first thing I said when I crashed was “I need to race Walton.” At the hospital I was asking how long the recovery would be so I could get back.
Classic! What do you do for schooling?
I am currently in grade 11, high school, and busy with a full course load and exams around the corner.
To me, it looked like you took your speed up a notch this summer. Are you happy with the improvements? 6th in the West and then 5th in the WMX East/West Shootout, and 4th in the Ladies class at the 2024 TransCan.
In my opinion, I was not able to get enough seat time to feel confident going into the season, so I feel like I should have been a bit more competitive. I can say that with many personal records broken it was still a successful season though!

What have you been doing since racing ended last fall?
Since race season I have been occupied with school sports, time in the gym, and so far two trips down south for some training.
Will you head south to train before again the 2025 season? Do you all go to the same place?
Depending on my schooling I hope to go back down sometime in February and again during spring break. We all train at Reynard Training Complex in Oklahoma.
You’re obviously too young to remember Robbie Reynard racing, but how is he as a coach?
Great! He is able to identify flaws and fine tune techniques that I had no idea could even be issues. He gets right to the point and has no shame, so you know just what to fix.
What are your racing plans for the 2025 season?
My plans, along with my sisters, include us racing the entire west coast WMX series, hitting up any local races that we are around for, and select east coast races including Transcan and ECAN.
What are your career goals?
My career goals are a bit unclear right now but for this season I would ideally like to be cracking the top 5 and consistently building off that into the future.
What’s the best and worst thing about being in a large racing family?
The best thing about being in a large racing family is that everyone has common values and ambitions, we are all in it together. The worst part is… well, imagine 5 girls sharing one tiny bathroom in a camper, there are some big personalities in our family so it can get wild!

I always joke that whenever there’s a crash in a WMX race, we’re bound to be down at least one Ferguson. What do you tell your poor mom to calm her down?!
I hate to say… in all the years of our racing, never have we all lined up at the Walton finale. There is not much for us to say to my mom, we have all accepted the fact that she will cry every race regardless of what happens and we love her for it. If you see her walking around the pits on a cloudy day with her sunglasses on… you know why!
OK, I appreciate you taking this time with us this week. I look forward to seeing you all again in 2025. Who would you like to thank?
First of all, thanks to you, Billy, for this opportunity and being someone who constantly brings attention to the WMX! And then to all the people who make our motocross dreams possible: Heartbeat Hot Sauce, Fox Racing Canada, Husqvarna, Capitol Motosports, Chudds Powersports, Red Ember, Jett Holdings, Ride for Dad Manitoba, 100 Percent, Sigvaldson refrigeration, Miracle Moss 92, Guts Racing, Good One Concepts, Ryno Power, SBS Brakes, Matrix Concepts Canada, my parents, and everyone else, thank you.
Anaheim 3 Supercross Entry List Includes Julien Benek
#500 Julien Benek from Mission, BC will join fellow Canadians #61 Cole Thompson, #551 Guillaume St Cyr, #585 Blake Davies, and #800 Preston Masciangelo in the 250 class this Saturday back at Angel Stadium in Anaheim, California, for A2.
Guillaume will try to ride again to see if his shoulder is strong enough after his big crash at A1. Another Canadian who crashed and hurt his shoulder is #943 Noah Viney. He had a big one in San Diego and has been checked out. There is some damage in his shoulder that will need attention and they are waiting for a final decision on what the next step is in his treatment and recovery.
