Welcome to Week #38 of the DMX Frid’Eh Update brought to you by RP Race Performance. I spent last night driving up to Gooderham, ON to cover my first-ever Corduroy Enduro. It’s the 70th anniversary of the race and I didn’t have another event that I was committed to, so this was the year I finally made it here.
Before hitting the road, I spent Thursday at Gopher Dunes riding the 2025 Honda CRF 250 and then I raced the E-Assist MTB race this morning.
What I’m trying to say is I haven’t had time to dig around for any stories so this Update will consist of our interview with Hunter Schlosser, which is OK because it will give everyone a chance to get to know the rider who showed up out west last season and raced a couple of our Canadian Triple Crown Series Nationals.
I’ve known him for a couple of years from seeing him down south and he’s one of the nicest guys you’ll ever meet. Here’s what he had to say when we contacted him this week:
Direct Motocross: Hello, Hunter. I have to admit, I was surprised to see your name on this list on Update Interviews because I know you didn’t do many of our races last summer. Cool. Let’s take a walk down memory lane and introduce you to Canadians who may not know you all that well. Can you tell us how old you are, where you’re from, and how you got into racing motocross?
Hunter Schlosser: Always excited to talk about some dirt bike racing! I am 26 years old, I’m from El Paso, Texas, a border town with no dirt bike tracks, unfortunately. My racing didn’t start until I was 11, although I rode pit bikes in my parents’ yard with my brother and some friends from the time I learned to ride my brother’s old z50. None of us raced until a Kicker Arenacross came to El Paso, then it was clear as day what I wanted to do from then on!
Who did you come up through the amateur ranks battling with and where?
I didn’t really have much of an amateur career, honestly. I didn’t race my first American amateur national until Freestone in 2016 and I was already 18 and in the C class. So, the only guy I can really think of that I raced amateurs and pros with was Carson Brown in 2017 in the B class and then I think we rode A together as well as raced Amsoil Arenacross together and I think we started Supercross around the same time too, but I wish I could say I gave him some more competition than I think I did. Haha.
Do you have a Loretta Lynn’s history?
I do! Crazy fun place! I went in 2016 in 250 and 450C and won a moto but that’s about it. Then 2017 went in 450B and 450B Mod and somehow squeaked a top 5 overall in one of the them. Then I made it back in 2018 in 250A and Collegeboy and that’s the last time I’ve been there.
What year did you turn Pro and what did you do that season?
I raced Pro Amsoil Arenacross in 2018, if that counts. I didn’t really do anything at all, honestly. I made 1 out I believe 4 main events I went to and got a couple of Supercross points. But I didn’t get all of my points for Supercross until 2020 in the Futures then did 4 rounds of Supercross and honestly just kind of crashed a lot…
Hey, am I crazy or did you run those crazy billboard plastics a few years ago?
I did not but, I was really darn close at one point. Makes a bit of sense to be able to blow up the people that help.
I see a couple 9ths in your SX history. What’s been your best race so far in your career?
Yeah, still chasing some more of those top 10’s! I would say Orlando in 2021 when I got that first 9th place finish would have to be one of them. I just remember being so zoned in and feeling so comfy on the bike. I even started jumping the big rhythm part of the way through the moto after not jumping it all day and in the middle of battling with some other guys as well.
How did it happen that we had you up here in Canada in 2023?
It was through one of the coolest guys I’ve got to met through racing dirt bikes. His name is Hugh Ridley and he was my title sponsor for almost my entire pro career and even a bit before. Hugh is a Canadian and lives in B.C. so I think we both thought it would be super cool to race the west coast rounds after Supercross and hang out in Beautiful British Columbia. I can’t thank Hugh enough for all he’s done for me!
You finished 6-8-14 in the 250 class out west and then I think Hugh said you were going east too, didn’t he? What happened? We never saw you in the east.
Yeah, I was having a blast and despite the results I feel like I was getting a groove going, but I did have a few goofs at Calgary that cost me. Hugh and I had been talking with the Manluk team about going east with them but unfortunately they decided to go with a different rider. It was a bummer but I’ve still got a fire in me to go do the whole series!
What did you get up to this summer?
This summer has been awesome but a busy one. My brother got married, I went on a mission trip to Belize, which was life changing, chasing some summer Arenacross, helping my parents around the house, (mostly cleaning all the old toys and dirt bike parts I’ve accumulated over the years), riding some off-road with some local guys, and hurrying up to figure everything out to go race some Supercross!
Wow. And what did you do for schooling and what’s your 9-5, if it’s not MX full time?
I went to public school until the last semester of my senior year and homeschooled my last 2 classes so I could go do some racing. I haven’t had any schooling since then except on the dirt bike. Haha. I help the family with their business in the summer as well as help out at a cattle auction here and there. But fortunately I’m a full-time racer during Supercross which is a true blessing.
I lurked on your Instagram and saw that you did an AX race in Colorado. I think you beat Colorado legend Todd Bannister?
I love those Colorado Arenacross races. Todd is a really good buddy of mine and we definitely had some good battles and a crazy head to head race with a third rider! I got him this last time and look forward to racing with him more.
What does the rest of the fall and winter look like for you?
Hopefully, I can make it out to Club MX by the end of October and get some good Supercross training in and maybe do some Kicker Arenacross if it’s in the cards, or maybe even some Triple Crown races in Canada if there are any teams that need a rider! But mostly just Supercross preparation.
And how about your future? What are your plans? Back to Canada some day?
This year I’m planning on racing the 450 class in Supercross and hopefully enough outdoor rounds to score some points and squeak my way into Supermotorcross, but I really really want to make it back to Canada and do some more rounds! I just need to find a way.
