Welcome to Week #37 of the DMX Frid’Eh Update brought to you by RP Race Performance. It’s another rare weekend where I won’t be leaving the house and pounding out the miles in the #DMXVan, but don’t worry, there is a ton of stuff on the ever-nearing horizon!

After last week’s 6-hour MTB relay race, it looks like a few people here in London are trying to organize a group ride that will take us around Boler Mountain and then Fanshawe Lake and will total 100K. After that, Emily and I are going to check out the new cabins Derek Schuster has over at Gopher Dunes on Tuesday night.

Then, on Thursday, I’m going to head back to Gopher Dunes to ride the 2025 Honda CRF 250 and 450. It will be the first time I’ve thrown a leg over a bike since last year, so I’m not expecting to break any Vet lap records, but I’ll be able to get a good feel for how the bikes feel, at least.

After that, it’s straight up to The Corduroy Enduro in Gooderham, Ontario. My plan is to leave Thursday night so I can go head to head with JSR in the electric-assist MTB race they’re holding on Friday. I’m coming for you, JSR! I just need to procure a bike and I’m all set. Hopefully, I can borrow of the KTM Group’s fleet.

When I get home from that, it will be off to Sand Del Lee near Ottawa, Ontario, for the 2025 Yamaha Media Day. I’d like to say the riding at Gopher Dunes will have me ready for Sand Del Lee, but it’s more likely to have me sore than “race ready.”

And then it’ll be time to fly over to England for the 2024 MXON at Matterley Basin! They released the pre-entry list for the event:

That will take us into October and that means the Vancouver Supercross and then the Dubya World Vet Championships at Glen Helen followed by the Mini O’s at Gatorback in Florida.

The outdoor season ends up here and you think it’s going to be a lot of downtime, but it’s really just the opposite!

Marcus Deausy from Williams Lake, BC is the rider who earned #37 for the 2024 season. Unfortunately, we never saw Marcus at the races running the number. Of course, I asked him why in our interview, so be sure to scroll down to that.

Marcus travelled the whole Canadian Triple Crown Series in 2023 with Tyler Yates and had his dad with him at the gate. It was always great to see him and he was starting to pick up some steam and making improvements. However, he has had more than his fair share of injuries and the one at the end of the 2022 season was quite the grocery list.

I’ve called Marcus “Acey” for a while now and I’ll tell you why. When I was a little kid in elementary school, probably grade 5, there was this older guy who was a real trouble-maker and tough guy from the “wrong side of the tracks.” (Actually, it was the wrong side of McNay Street, but not many will get that reference.) Some friends and I were playing over in the schoolyard and there was a fresh layer of snow on the ground. This crazy guy comes flying across the tarmac on his bicycle and was doing donuts as he pedalled as hard as he could. All the while he was doing it, he kept yelling, “Acey deucey, boys…acey deucey!!!” He went around in circles for a while and then fell in the snow pretty hard. He looked up and said, “Hank snow and keeled over…

I had no idea what he was talking about, but, because he was one of those tough guys you remember from school, we all just humoured him and laughed like we were Radar from MASH. (Google it, Bowker!)

I can’t remember where I left my keys, but if you need an old and irrelevant reference, I’m your guy!

Anyway, Marcus will always be Acey Deausy to me.

Let’s get to the interview, shall we?

Here’s what Marcus Deausy had to say when we contacted him this week. | Bigwave photo

Direct Motocross: Hello, Marcus. We haven’t seen you in a while and I think there’s a lot to talk about. First off, tell everyone a bit about yourself. Where you’re from, how old you are, how you got into Moto, and stuff like that…

Marcus Deausy: Hey, Billy, I really appreciate the opportunity to be on here! I’m from Williams Lake, BC, and I’m 20 years old. How I got into racing was from my dad, he took me to the local Williams Lake race when I was 5 years old and ever since that day I was hooked. haha.

Who did you come up through the ranks with and who was your moto hero when you were young. Remember, Brock Hoyer is listening! Lol

There were definitely tons of fast guys I came up with, but I’d say my biggest competitors every weekend were Julien Benek and Daniel Elmore. It felt like every moto we would always have a battle or be one and two. I always had a blast racing with those guys.

I’d definitely say Brock was my moto hero growing up. He taught me tons and was always there to help me. Especially in my younger days, we would train together, and travel together all the time. As I got a little older guys like Jess Pettis, and Kyle Beaton helped me tons too. I’ve been very fortunate of the talent that mentored me and opportunities I had.

I’m always impressed with riders who come from a long way away from the main action nearer the main cities. I’m guessing there was a lot of driving to get to the races when you were younger. How far did you have to go to follow a circuit?

Being in Williams Lake, I’m kind of in the middle of BC’s Future West Moto series. As I was growing up racing those races, the farthest I’d have to travel would be to the Lower Mainland which is about 5 hours away. There were times when the BCMA was hosting putting races in and we would go as far as Terrace which is 10 hours. It definitely wasn’t too bad at all. But once I turned pro, and started following the Triple Crown Series. The travel time would turn into days haha. But even with the long travel time, I really enjoyed seeing the country.

Last year when I travelled across Canada with Tyler Yates was such a blast. I’d say that was the most fun summer I’ve ever had. Made tons of awesome memories and met a lot of great people.

You were #53 in 2023 and then jumped way up to 37 for this race season, but we never saw you at the races. Why not?

It was really cool to be number 37 for this year. I was definitely looking forward to running it, but I ended up making the decision to stop racing, shortly after the 2023 Triple Crown Series was finished. I felt I had learned tons last year both as a racer and a person. But when I got home from back east, I ended up having a crash which caused a small injury to my elbow.  I was getting tired of the injuries and didn’t think I could swing another year of racing at the highest level, while working and training. Although I had the most generous and supportive sponsors, financially it just wasn’t making sense. So I decided to take a different career path, which is welding and fabrication.

You’re no stranger to big injuries! I know you had a big one in 2022. In our text conversation, you summed up those injuries like this: broken pelvis, ribs, sternum, punctured lung, separated shoulder, and concussed. Yikes. How were you coming back after that one?

I am fully healed from that injury list. Haha. I’ve definitely had some hard times with the injuries but that is part of the sport, and I wouldn’t change anything. It definitely builds character and mental strength.

So, I see on your Instagram page that you were off the bike for an entire year and just got back on it. I see a lot of welding. Where were you and that’s what you are doing for work?

Yes, definitely was a big switch from riding almost daily to taking a year off completely. My first time back on the bike was about 2 weeks ago, and man I had a blast. It felt great to be back on 2 wheels again. With my new career being welding and fabrication, I definitely enjoy making content still. So I occasionally like to post some of the things I build or weld up. I am currently working for a steel fabrication company called Allied Blower in Williams Lake, but I am moving to Kamloops in just under 6 weeks for a 6-month welding school program. I’m really looking forward to that.

Does the Monday-Friday life make you miss riding or do you enjoy the cash more these days?

I definitely miss racing and riding tons, I had such a blast doing while growing up. I spent a ton of quality time with family and made so many lifelong friends along the way, but making the switch to a different career path has been great too. I really enjoy the challenge of learning something new and trying to get better daily. The best part is I still get to spend one on one time learning from my dad. I’m competing with him to see who can weld better. Haha.

How has it been getting back riding? Will you line up at any fall local races? How about the AMO Arenacross in Chilliwack?

Getting back on the bike was great. I forgot how much fun dirt bikes are. I definitely felt rusty, but after a couple days I felt like myself again. I’m not planning on doing any races this year, but who knows. Haha. I would like to possibly hit some next year, if the Triple Crown Series comes west.

And what does the future look like, race-wise, for you? Will we see the #510 at the nationals next summer?

I don’t think you will see me doing the whole series again, but I’d definitely like to do the odd race here and there. I do really enjoy making videos on Instagram. I’ll probably continue doing riding clips once I get a bike again.

What did you miss most about racing?

I’d say what I miss most is the competition. I really enjoyed the competitiveness of the sport. As I got older, that’s what I realized I loved the most about the sport.

Are you 100% healthy now or do you have lingering aches and pains?

I definitely still have some sore days, for sure, but I’m back to being 100% healthy.

Marcus’ future will be all about his welding profession, but he’ll still find time to ride and enter the odd race, so follow him out on his Instagram. | Bigwave photo

OK, what wild animal do you see most when you drive around up there in BC? I trapped a couple chipmunks here in Southwestern Ontario this week…

I’d say the most common animal I see is deer. You can almost count on seeing a couple every day. You definitely need to stay focused while driving. Haha.

OK, we hope to see you somewhere soon, Marcus “Acey” Deausy. Good luck in the future and who would you like to thank?

I’d like to thank everyone who helped me along my journey as a racer. I think the list would be too long to type out. I had so many great sponsors and local business that made my career possible, which I’m super grateful for. I want to give the biggest thanks to my mom, dad and brother. They gave up so much for me and gave me the best opportunities. I truly can’t thank them enough for all their sacrifices. I’m super thankful for all that I got to do and enjoy during racing.

I hope nobody told him it was a pit bike race and that’s what he’s expecting! We’ll both be first-timers next week. No, I’m not riding, just covering it for the first time.
