Welcome to Week #33 of the DMX Frid’Eh Update brought to you by RP Race Performance. It’s the week after the final round of the 2024 Canadian Triple Crown Series Motocross Nationals and the TransCan GNC at Walton Raceway. This is going to sound like our version of that thing Jimmy Kimmel always does, but I can’t believe the series is already finished! Yes, we say that every year, but I’m afraid that the older I get the quicker it goes. You’ll see…

We just witnessed the most exciting moto I can remember in Canadian MX history! That second 250 moto was enough to make anyone pay attention. When I try to think of a race that even comes close, my mind goes back to that one 450 moto at Sand Del Lee way back in 2007 that had 4 or 5 riders all going wheel-to-wheel for the win, but this was much, much crazier.

I’m sitting in our back yard on the love seat under the sun umbrella as walnuts fall from the big trees keeping Olive the Aussiedoodle on her toes. She’s waiting for the squirrels that eventually wander out and try to steal them from her yard and she’s not having it. She sits at the top of the little hill and looks out over the yard looking exactly like the old Bugs Bunny cartoon with Sam and Ralph the sheep dogs.

There are a few things we need to talk about, so let’s get to this week’s honouree.

Here’s Tyler Yates as an Intermediate back in 2020. | Bigwave photo

Tyler Yates from Duncan, BC is #33 for 2024. If you’ve ever been to Vancouver Island and taken the ferry from Tsawwassen, you know just how far away Tyler is from home when he’s out here in the east racing.

Tyler is one of those riders who sits just on the cusp of being a contender for podiums. I always say that I’m waiting for his breakout ride because I know he’s capable of producing one. And if you know this sport at all, you know confidence is like gold when you’re racing at the top level. One great ride and I think Tyler could back it up with more. Unfortunately, he didn’t get to end the season with one at Walton, but we’ll let him explain that.

He ended up 13th in the 250 class for the season. Here’s a look:

Here’s what Tyler had to say when we contacted him travelling home to BC. | Bigwave 2022 photo

Direct Motocross: Hey, Tyler. We’re just a couple days after the final round at Walton Raceway. Where do we find you right now?

Tyler Yates: Hey, Billy. I’m currently just past Spokane, Washington, about 5-6 hours from the border.

How was getting across the border with all your MX stuff? Do you have a carné for everything? Is it OK coming back into the country too?

Getting into Michigan was fast; they didn’t look in the trailer or anything. I have receipts for just about everything I have in there. And coming home through the Peace Arch border they seem to be pretty good. But I haven’t crossed through there yet this trip. But going through the states is definitely the way to go. Pretty much shaved off 8 hours of travel time for us

OK, you’re the first rider we’re talking to for one of these since the last race of our Nationals. You ended up 13th overall in the 250 class. How would you sum up your season?

This season definitely had its ups and downs. I felt like I rode pretty good early in the western rounds but the east coast I struggled a bit, just with weird little mistakes that led up to missing some pretty good finishing positions.

But all and all I’m happy with 13th overall in a very competitive 250 class. Not where I wanted to be this season. I learned a lot and felt like I bettered myself racing that hard with a lot of fast guys!

Unfortunately, Tyler’s season ended one round early after he hurt his shoulder at the TransCan and couldn’t line up on Sunday. | Bigwave photo

OK, what happened at Walton?

The last round I ended up crashing on Friday racing the TransCan. I landed on both my shoulders pretty hard before the roller section. I went and got checked out and nothing was broken so tried racing on Sunday but couldn’t hang on for more than a lap with the pain I was in still. I thought I should probably sit it out if I couldn’t ride safely and to my full potential. Definitely a bummer. I hate missing any racing.

You cracked the top 10 in Manitoba with a 9th. Was that your best ride and favourite track?

Yeah, that definitely felt pretty good. I feel like Manitoba and Lethbridge were my best overall results this year. I had some other good rides too that I was happy with!

And yes, Manitoba was one of my favourites on the series. Definitely a beautiful venue.  Also, another favourite was Riverglade.

I feel like people need to know a little more about you. Can you tell us a few things?

A few things about me would be:

I’m from Duncan, BC on Vancouver Island.  I like restoring/painting old Ford pickups and Broncos.  I race dwarf cars from time to time when I’m home.  I race a bit of off-road races in the off season.  I can do all bike work/engine work to my bikes. I like going fishing. Other than that, motocross racing is pretty much my life. Haha.

How old are you?

I’m 21 years old.

Who did you come up through the ranks battling?

I started racing on 85’s and at the time at West Shore Motocross would have been Garret Horsman or in Intermediate I remember some pretty good races with Marcus Deausy

What year did you turn Pro?

My first full year pro doing the nationals would have been in 2021.

Who is your all-time MX hero?

I admire Ryan Dungey, for sure. I like how consistent he was and how professional he went about everything.

What kind of music do you listen to?

A little bit of everything, but mostly 80/90’s rock: Def Leopard, Rush, Led Zeppelin, Heart etc.. Haha

How were/are you as a student? What was/is your favourite subject?

In school I was pretty quiet. Haha I definitely didn’t stick around any longer than I had to. My favourite subject would be the shop classes.

What’s your next favourite sport?

I follow a lot of car racing and always have liked baseball.

Tyler’s best finish was a 9th overall at Pilot Mound in Manitoba. | Bigwave photo

Who did you travel with this summer?

This summer my dad came out with me most of the time, but when he was back home I drove the motorhome to the next round wherever that would have been at the time before he flew back in, but most of the time my dad.

Oh, one more thing. What’s up with the sweet little Mazda pick-up truck? I love that thing!

Haha. Thanks, man. So, I’ve actually had 3 of them. This white one is my 3rd one I’ve brought out east. The first two I brought out. People love them in Ontario and it turns out they’re really rare out there, so I sold the last two at the last round of the season. This white one I got from my parents’ impound yard. It was stolen and a guy was living in it. Haha. It was spray painted black when I got it but I cleaned it up, gave it a polish, and it’s been a great truck for having wheels when we park the motorhome at the track. And it fits with my bikes in the box of it in my trailer! It makes going and doing laundry or going riding super convenient.

What will you do for the rest of the summer?

For the rest of summer probably ride as much as I can, work, and work in the shop. Maybe get out on the boat too.

Tyler has a lot going on and hopefully we see him back travelling the Nationals again in 2025. | Bigwave photo

What do you do for work when you aren’t travelling for races?

In the off season I drive a truck for my dad and I also have a small motocross graphic company ( North West Design ) as a side hustle. Haha

Are we going to see you lining up in Supercross ever? Is that something you’re interested in?

I would definitely like to, but time will tell. It’s definitely something I would like to do if I could get the support to!

Here’s an old school question for you: Who’s in your regular crew?

This year at the races I hung out with Danny Elmore and the Merricks a fair bit which was a lot of fun.

What are your future plans?

Right now I’m just going to start working toward what’s next and work on some weaknesses I had this year. I know what I have to work on and I’m focused on progressing to that point in my racing career. Mainly, just have to start believing in myself a bit more and get more confident out there. Also, probably do some off-road races and Arenacross until the new schedule comes out and make a decision from there!

Well, the race days are so jam-packed anymore that I really didn’t get to chat with you guys much this summer. Thanks for taking some time with us for Week #33. Who would you like to thank?

Thanks for having me on here, Bill. First off, I would like to thank my mom and dad.  JC Seitz and Fox Canada. They have continued to support me for the past 3 seasons and can’t thank them enough for that! Seco seat covers, Factory Connection, Matrix Concepts.

2024 Team Canada MXON Announced

2024 Team Canada MXON Announced

Team Canada MXON has been announced to represent Canada at the 2024 Motocross of Nations at Matterley Basin in England.

For Immediate Release:
August 16th 2024
Prince George, British Columbia
Canada

Kourtney Lloyd, Team Manager
“I am happy to be able to present the 2024 Team Canada Motocross of Nations Team. With a crazy
season behind us and a lot of discussions behind the scenes the picks have been made and we are
ready to tackle Matterley Basin in October. We will be heading over this year with the thoughts of
redemption in our minds. We have an extremely talented group of riders in Canada and we are ready to
showcase that. The Team selection process is not an easy one and I want to thank everyone for their
input and their patience. I have had the honour of leading all three of these riders at this race at different
times and they all bring a different skill set to the table. I am very excited to see them all work together
toward the same goal. The sheer grit they all have shown this season and overseas in the past is
unmatched and I am confident that we will make our Nation proud”

Jess Pettis MX1 #70
“I am super grateful to be picked to represent Canada as the Team Captain, alongside some
experienced and great teammates. I have had the honour of representing Canada two times previously
and to be able to go for a third as Team Captain after winning the 2024 MX1 Title this season makes me
really proud. I have worked so hard to get here. I am more than ready to get overseas and get after it.”

Kaven Benoit MX2 #71
“Representing Canada this year means so much. I collected awesome memories racing this event and
looking forward to creating more. It’s always a privilege to be part of team Canada. We have an
experienced line up this year and feel we can accomplish big things. Also having fun along the way and
appreciating every minute of it is part of the plan!”

Dylan Wright Open #72
“I am very honoured to once again represent Canada at this year’s MXON race in Matterley Basin. I will
do everything in my power to get the results I know I can on the world stage and make Canadians
proud!!”

I’d like to add an “Atta boy” in here for Tyler Medaglia. | Bigwave photo

I’d like to add a little something to this announcement, just here in the Frid’Eh Update. Kourtney picked the team earlier on with the information she had available to her about riders’ health. She originally had Tyler Medaglia in there on the MX3 machine and not Dylan Wright. You’ll remember, Dylan had that nasty crash at Round 2 in Raymond, Alberta, and so Kourtney decided to go with Tyler.

My point isn’t to stir anything up here. I’d just like Tyler to get some recognition for being the one who made the call and said he’d like to step down from the team to allow Dylan to go, now that it looks like he’s back up to health and speed. That was a solid move from a solid individual.

Talon Medaglia will be over there with Yamaha for the bLU cRU Super Finale so Tyler will be there being “Captain Canada” from the pits. Tyler will represent Canada at the ISDE before the MXON and then race the Corduroy Enduro afterward, so we’ll see him out there. Full kudos to Tyler for this one.

Eli Tomac to race in WSX in 2024

WSX World Supercross logo

From: WSXChampionship.com:

As the countdown to the start of the 2024 season continues, the FIM World Supercross Championship (WSX) is delighted to confirm that Eli Tomac will join the series’ grid for the upcoming season.

A legend and icon of the Motocross and Supercross scene, Tomac has forged an illustrious career and as an eight-time AMA Motocross and Supercross champion with more than 100 wins and 200 podiums, has garnered global acclaim for his incredible skill, unstoppable determination and natural fighting spirit.

By joining the grid for 2024, Tomac rejoins WSX where he made history in 2022 after winning the series’ inaugural Grand Prix at Principality Stadium in Cardiff, Wales, in a hard-fought evening of racing.

As part of CDR Yamaha in the championship’s premier 450cc class, Tomac will be racing a factory Yamaha 450. His arrival promises to elevate excitement for the season ahead as the Colorado-born rider aims to take the fight to the series’ two-time reigning World Champion, Ken Roczen, who will also return for 2024.

WSX’s 2024 season gets underway on 26 October at BC Place in Vancouver, Canada, before a double-header at HBF Park in Perth, Australia, on 23-24 November, concluding at Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates on 4 December.

Eli Tomac, Rider, CDR Yamaha, said: “I’m really excited to be rejoining the WSX grid this year and I’m hoping I can relive some of the success I had in Cardiff in 2022.  I’ve not raced at any of the venues on the calendar, or even raced in Australia or Abu Dhabi before so it’s going to be a new experience. I’ve had some pace in my riding this year and I’m looking forward to the season starting to see what we can achieve, hopefully picking up some podium finishes, and to also put on some amazing races for the fans.”

Tom Burwell, FIM World Supercross Championship CEO, said: “Eli is one of the biggest riders in the world right now, and his previous successes show that he is undoubtedly one of the most talented. We are delighted to have an athlete of his calibre join the championship in 2024 and I’m sure our fans will be too. WSX is already set to be a thrilling experience this year, but alongside the pure spectacle of the events, seeing the best talent on two wheels in Eli and Ken [Roczen] battle it out on the world stage will be truly unforgettable.”

Craig Dack, Team Principal, CDR Yamaha, said: “We are extremely happy to be back for WSX 2024 and it doesn’t get any better having Eli Tomac as the headline rider for CDR. The way Eli goes about his racing is something I’ve admired for many years – he’s humble and a real fan favourite. But when he puts his helmet on he turns into one of the hardest charging and determined racers you will ever see. I have only met Eli a couple of times and to now be working with him in his quest to win a World Supercross Championship title will be a pleasure and an honour. I’d like to thank all the people who have made this process very smooth. Yamaha USA – Jim Roach, Star Racing, Monster Energy, Yamaha Australia, WSX, John Tomac and of course the star of the show, Eli.”

I think we’re going to have a pretty busy off season as far as the old rumour mill is concerned too. We’re hearing several riders will be making moves and that other would like to. 2025 will not look like 2024 if even half of these things turn out to be true! And there are some things that will be expanding, like new teams and upgraded teams, for next year that will definitely tighten up the look of the Pro pits. We’ll keep on top of these things and let you know as soon as something concrete happens.

We’ve got Jordan Wilsey from RussOgraphy down at Budds Creek for DMX covering the event and keeping an eye on our Canadians who are lining up. Watch for updates on how things are going on Saturday.

The weather forecast for my area looks like absolute garbage this weekend, so I’m not sure what we’ll be doing. I hope things look better wherever you are. It’ll give me time to work on Faces at the Races from Walton. Oh, and if Josh Cox is reading this, I’ll get to work on the one from Gopher Dunes, too. Have a great weekend, everyone.

Why is Charlie Steffler smiling like there’s something she’s not telling us? Oh, it’s just this: “See you at the races...” | Bigwave photo
