Canadians at Anaheim 1
A look at the 5 Canadians racing the 2025 SMX World Championship and Monster Energy AMA Supercross at Angel Stadium in Anaheim, California.
By Billy Rainford
We had more Canadians racing the opening round of the 2025 SMX World Championship and Monster Energy AMA Supercross than usual with 5 riders from the Great White North trying to make the cut at Angel Stadium in Anaheim, California. It really should have been 6.
It’s our job to keep an eye on each of them, so let’s have a look at how they did.
#61 Cole Thompson
Brigden, Ontario
Team Solitaire Heartbeat Hot Sauce Yamaha
Q: 11th
Heat 2: 4th
Main: 10th
Cole started the Main in around 13th place and moved his way up as high as 8th place. He was in a dog fight with #65 Lux Turner each time he was on the track. Late in the Main, he was in a battle with #36 Garrett Marchbanks when #100 Cole Davies caught up and passed them both, pushing Cole back to 10th at the checkered flag.
#943 Noah Viney
Murrieta, California (He’s listed on the entry list as from Ottawa, Ontario, Canada 👍)
MCR Smartop Honda
Q: 22nd
Heat 1: 8th
Main: 18th
Noah started outside the obstacles on the start straight and was forced wide in the left-hand first turn. He was way back in 18th early but moved his way up to 14th on lap 3. He crossed the line 18th and said that he could do better with a good start, which he’s known for.
#800 Preston Masciangelo
Brantford, Ontario
AJE GasGas Gas Monkey
Q: 28th
Heat 1: 12th
LCQ:19th
In the LCQ, Preston nose-wheelied into the first turn and came out way back. He was riding well but then messed up before the finish line jump and dropped back, finishing 19th.
#585 Blake Davies
Mission, British Columbia
International Truimph Racing
Q: 43
Blake continued to look more and more comfortable at his first-ever attempt at qualifying for an AMA Supercross. He was 3rd in 250 C first qualifying session and felt comfortable with his position. Unfortunately, he was told the second session would be slower so he was safe. He went out and just worked on sections to get even more comfortable for what he thought would be the night show. Times dropped and he was pushed out of the Fast 40 and missed the show.

#551 Guillaume St Cyr
Victoriaville, Quebec
Q: 63
There’s more to this story as ‘Guac’ took a hard spill when he came up short on a tricky triple that was claiming a lot of riders during the qualifying sessions. He fell hard on his left shoulder and told me on his way out of the stadium that he thought he’d broken his collarbone. It turned out to be a separation, but it meant he was out for the rest of the day. He’s hopeful to be back in action this week in San Diego, but we’ll have to wait and see how he’s feeling.
Julien Benek from Mission, British Columbia, is the rider who should be filling the 6th spot for us this year in the west on his International Motorsports Triumph, but a crash while training in Georgia will keep him out until at least the end of January. He hit his head, broke his wrist, and hurt his leg in the crash.
Good luck to everyone this weekend.
