2025 Seattle Supercross | What Happened at Lumen Field

By Billy Rainford

Seattle is basically in a temperate rainforest. Like I always said when I lived in Vancouver: “It doesn’t always rain here but it’s almost always wet.” Well, for 9 months of the year, anyway. You were never guaranteed dryness until the middle of July. And when you saw rain in the forecast in October, you battened down the hatches for the next 8-9 months. So when the sun came out before the 2nd qualifiers at Lumen Field for Round 11 of the 2025 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Saturday afternoon, I was surprised and very happy.

Seattle is one of the few places I’ve never been to a Supercross race. I’ve been to a Mariners game next door and I don’t even like baseball! I’ve been to Washougal for the AMA Pro Motocross race 9 or 10 times, but never a Supercross.

Everyone cringes at the thought of an open-air SX race in the Pacific Northwest in the springtime, but we got lucky and the weather wasn’t a factor once the riding started on Saturday for the shortened program that saw riders only get 2, 8:00 qualifying sessions before the night show. Now let’s watch as it’ll rain the next 4 weekends in a row for our stay in the northeast starting in Foxborough, all open-air stadiums…

Heading into this round, #2 Cooper Webb held the red plate but admitted he saw Seattle as the round he needed to prove a point to everyone that he was the one in charge of this championship. #4 Chase Sexton was seemingly on a bit of a roll and Webb knew he needed to squash his momentum and his confidence.

What we got in return was one of the best 450 Mains we’ve seen in a long time. Not only that, but last year Webb bested Sexton by a scant .5 seconds. This year it was just as close again with a margin of victory stretched to just .7! Racing action like this makes me wonder why our sport isn’t the most-watched in the world?!

Webb’s teammate #32 Justin Cooper was the quickest in qualifying and seems to be the rider with the most-improved results this season. In fact, he’s the odds-on favourite to lead any Main around the first turn.

In the 450 Main, it was #7 Aaron Plessinger who got the jump out of the gate, but he would stall the bike nearing the first turn and force #27 Malcolm Stewart off the track as they headed through it. Malcolm got the worst of it and was at the back of the pack to start the race while Plessinger managed to salvage a top 10 start after the chaos.

Webb would grab the holeshot ahead of #94 Ken Roczen who looked great early, even taking the lead for 9 laps, but was suffering the effects of an AC joint separation in his shoulder.

The top 4 were Roczen, Webb, Sexton, and Cooper at the halfway mark with Plessinger closing the gap to make it a 5-way battle for the win. With the track as rutted and technical as it was, it seemed like it was going to be the rider who made the fewest mistakes that would come out on top of this one.

Sexton made a opportunistic pass on both Webb and Roczen to take the lead on lap 14 or 15 and start to put on a surge that looked like it would take him to this win. But this race was far from over.

Roczen would start to fade back while Cooper would move to 3rd but then fall and drop off the lead 2 riders. 2025 Seattle was going to be another dogfight between Sexton and Webb.

With Sexton leading, both he and Webb would mess up before one of the tricky rhythm sections. Webb would be able to clean the section and take over the lead with just 3 laps to go. Plessinger had taken advantage of others’ mistakes and was in 3rd place.

Sexton had one last chance to close in on Webb on the final lap but messed up the entry to the last rhythm section, allowing Webb to gain a bit of an advantage.

Sexton pushed the 2nd-last corner and tried to make a play for a last turn inside move on Webb, but Webb executed the perfect protection into and through the final corner, leaving Sexton to take a look at it then decide to go wide.

When the flag waved, Webb flew to victory while pointing back at Sexton in 2nd place. It was a race for the ages.

In the 250 West Regional battle, recently-arrested #38 Haiden Deegen and his team played it up and he rode qualifying in a black and white striped jersey. Deegan and Cooper in the 450 class were the only 2 riders to dip into the 46’s during qualifying.

When the night show started, Deegan changed out the pinstripes for a full orange set of gear to look like he was in county lock-up.

When the gate dropped for the Main, it was 17-year-old phenom #100 Cole Davies out front. Behind him, #23 Julien Beaumer put on a quick move to take the lead ahead of #36 Garrett Marchbanks, #37 Coty Schock, and Deegan.

Deegan would fall just after the finish line jump and drop to 8th place.

Davies would execute a nice block pass on Beaumer to take the lead on lap 2 and never relinquish it. He lead by over 8 seconds at points during the race as he managed his lead, looking like a seasoned pro on the technical track.

Marchbanks continued to skim the whoops and passed Beaumer briefly early to take 2nd before losing the position to him on the same lap. He would retake 2nd with just over 2 laps to go to finish 2nd.

Behind them, Deegan was moving his way forward and got himself up to the rear wheel of his now nemesis Beaumer on the last lap. When Beamer left the door open in the left-hand turn before the flag, Deegan took full advantage, rode across the ruts on the inside and made the block pass, bumping Beaumer off the podium.

After the checkered flag, words were exchanged, helmets were grabbed and slapped, and the crowd went wild.

When they interviewed Beaumer after the race, the boo birds were out briefly to let him hear it. He warned that Deegan should be on the lookout for some payback in the East/West Showdown coming up in Philadelphia in 2 weeks.

Say what you want about either rider, but everyone is paying attention to this “beef” and it gives us something to look forward to.
