2024 Dubya World Vet Championships | Friday

Here’s what happened with Team Canada and more at the 2024 Dubya World Vet Championships at Glen Helen on Friday practice day before racing starts on Saturday.

By Billy Rainford

Practice got underway on Friday at the 40th Annual Dubya World Vet Championships at Glen Helen Raceway. With around 80 Canadians on the entry list, I was busy trying to figure out who was who. Here’s a rundown of what went on today.

Here’s a look at some of the things that made the news today at Glen Helen Raceway.

Cell service went into the toilet as soon as everyone showed up, so I was unable to do any real updates during the day. It was sunny and around 22C without a cloud in the sky for the most part of the day.

Ryan “Skippy” Mobbs puts together a super-solid team for this event and bleeds red and white.
The first person I ran into after getting my wrist band was Sebastien Racine. He’s down here to take part in the Race Tech seminar all week here in California. He’s thinking about his future.
Dave MacGregor’s day didn’t start out well. He was having some electrical issues they were chasing.
He ended up having to rent a bike.
1/2 in the can, 1/2 on the ground and his shoes…
#716 Todd Minnie is here this year and everyone says he was flying on Thursday. He decided to take the day off to be ready for the weekend.
Johnny Proteau’s rig is home base again this year.
Checking out the track to see what’s what.
Lee Jenkinson was here last year too, but he was injured and couldn’t race.
He’s much happier this year.
One of the riders in this shot may or may not have passed out in the hot tub and is getting checked out at the hospital tonight. He’ll be fine and be back at the track tomorrow, I’m sure.
That’s BJ Lawson doing some bike work.
With so many Canadian Vet riders here, I’m sorry that I don’t know everyone’s name.
#218 Jordan Dent with a little work under the hood.
Chris Howell is here helping someone out. He said he’s got one more year of Supercross in him.
Mike Brown is here to race the 450 and the 125 in the Pasha race.
Phil Nicoletti is here and doing the same.
Tyler Rayner is here and racing a Stark Varg. He’s got Seth McDowell helping him out.
I think Jim Frederickson must have caught me putting Direct Motocross stickers on everyone’s bike.
FXR owner Milt Reimer is here racing.
Mark DeGraaf and #86 Yari Heinonen had a nice little battle in their first practice session.
Yari also has a Stark Varg here but is racing his Yamaha.
I’m dying to post a photo of #20 Shane Cuthbertson’s revealing mesh undershirt, but we’ll go with this more flattering shot instead. He was going well out there.
Man, even I’d race if he lent me this bike! Please don’t call my bluff.
Sears catalog pose 101. It’s a Vet race, they’ll get it!
A little nest of riders from Saskatchetoon.
#7 Tim Tremblay is here and is one of our fast guys. Unfortunately, he got really sick this week and is a game-time decision tomorrow morning. Let’s go, Tim!!!
#800 Mike Alessi is another top rider racing a couple classes here.
He said he’s worried about the start. I told him it’s the square-edges that are gonna try to kill him! I was going for a slight play on the Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid line. Swing and a miss!
There’s a pretty good chance he’s also a Canuck.
Pew pew…
I saw red numbers on white background, so I assumed…
I have never seen so many bikes on a track at once. Well, maybe at the Weston Supermare!
Scott Morrison from Merritt, BC. I guess it’s snowing there, so he couldn’t mention the weather when his wife called. And check out that DMX sticker placement! Haha I rode his electric-assist MTB around all day. Thank you. I hope he charged the battery for tomorrow!
That’s a dude playing a dude on another dude’s bike. He works at Chapparrel and was out there enjoying Skippy’s mint CR500.
He spent a lot of time sitting around looking cool.
#145 Brady Breemersch looks good again this year.
#445 Marc Dionne made the trip from Quebec.
#119 Brent Pilon from Saskatchewan looked fast out there today too.
#830 is Taylor Coates.
My red numbers on white theory at work again.
This was ugly for a while and caused a delay in the program.
The day ended back at the house and in the hot tub…as it should!

You can watch the racing LIVE on Sunday.

Racing starts tomorrow! Get some rest. “See you at the races...”
